m70-FE5, What do you think? - Page 2

The new stuff in January will be HOT. (I've seen some pics and specs)

Be prepaird to puy $1899 and up for Yonah.

You will see a mix of the current Dothan processors and Yonah in Q1 and Q2.

Can't wait to see 'em...

I think you should get the M70. To counter the statements made by the FS guys, my laptop is two months old now and hasn't had a single problem with operation.

I honestly believe you though, for years i've known that Futureshop employees don't know their stuff half as well as most people think.(generalizing) And yes the dead pixels i'm not concerned about, right now my lcd has 4....LOL
I might wait to buy a laptop anyways, as I think having a 12" or 14" w/ a decent vcard would be ideal.

oddly enough i dont work for toshiba, i just hate it when uninformed people are trying to pass off their "knowledge" laptops and sell people something they dont need, or screw people out of their money.

I dont think you should hold your breath for the dual core PM's... Look at the Pentium D's. They are still outperformed by the P4s especially in gaming apps(I think gaming is a high priority for many people on this forum). Obviously Intels dual core technology could take a leap forward with the PM version but at this point the software isnt designed to take advantage of it so the gains may not be that significant.

I believe Yonah is a 64-bit processor and in my estimation this will probably be the most significant advantage.

My theory on deciding when to buy a computer is just buy it when you have the need and/or money. It is fairly well known that the release of new technology is primarily driven by market conditions and its not necessarily dependant on what technology the manufacturers possess. As a result of this, as soon as Yonah comes out, there will be another big development coming around the corner that will cause the consumer to desire the latest and greatest once again. Having said all that, I of course am speaking before we know the eventual impact Yonah will have on computer technology. It could very well turn out to be worth the wait.

Oh this Yonah business sounds exciting.
"Will I be able to play CS 1.6 on it?" bahaha! just kidddding

Anyone have any links off hand where the upcoming laptops can be seen? Just for the record, I've tried to hook up as many of you who replied with good reps.

Yonah's just going to bring dual core. 64-bit doesn't come till Merom, which is suppose to come at the end of 2006 (which I guess would be the next big thing to wait for).

A Yonah at the same clockspeed as a Dothan should be at least as fast in games. Pentium D's game performance suffered because games don't take advantage of dual core yet and Intel had to significantly reduce clockspeed to make it dualcore.

Problem with waiting for Yonah is TDP is going up, the dual core T series has a TDP between 25-49W. While I'm betting Yonah will use less power doing light tasks compared to the Dothan, manufacturers are going to need to design the cooling system to handle more heat when at full load. Unless power usage for video cards go down, Look at IBM's new Z60t, one of the reasons for the lack of a dedicated video card is because the chassis is designed in preparation for Yonah. I don't see the next generation laptops improving much for gaming outside of DTR's.

He also showed me a few of the m70's which the video had completely gone. This made me sad....because they look so fricking nice. I hope somebody can reassure me that these are not common problems with this model. I still want a Toshiba, but I think now may not be the time to buy. Maybe in April or May? Buying an Asus or something customizable like that might be another option i suppose.

Are you located in Montreal? It sounds like the FS rep was talking about me.. I've returned 2 M70 with the x700... First time I thought the power supply was defective because while the laptop was running, the power supply was making normal noise , but as soon as I shut down the laptop, it was making a very loud hi pitched noise to a point I couldn’t sleep.. So I returned it and took another one. I get home, plug it in, same exact behavior, so I figure it's normal. And after one hour of use, bang!... dead pixel! What are the odds of this?? Also when the cpu was not busy, it was making a high pitched noise, but has soon as it was busy, no more hi pitched sound. I never had those noise issues with the M40. This said it’s true, most of the time, FS reps will say anything to make a sale.

And yeh, what’s up with those orange and peacock blue UGLY colors.. this is so stupid.. we should be able to chose the color want like in the USA. And for me it’s the dark grey color.. Of course, it’s a matter of taste.

Today, I’m going for the M50-MX5 hopefully everything will be fine.

Cheers!

People dont realize that Canada is "small" in population and "large" in how the population is distributed across the physical landscape of the great white north.

That being said...it does not make it fiscally possible for any company (like toshiba) to offer various colors... Many companies have tried to sell products through the retail channels in multiple colors and have ALWAYS failed.

Failed = there is ALWAYS going to be a "DOG" color...a color that doesn't work. It may work in one location/city/retailer but not in another. This causes huge issues with funding retailers to move those "dog" colors.

That being said...Canada is also to small for Build To Order style notebooks.

I wish people would stop comparing Canada to the US. Realize their pure size and buying power.

Morever, companies spend quite a bit of money researching colors (for any product). From what I understand the Peacock Blue color is doing extremely well. The Sunlight Copper is also doing well and was specifically request by the big box retailers.

the Dark color is called "mist grey"
the orange colour is really popular where i am, especially among the university students...

Mist grey? Hmmmm... I would think mist would be baby blue colour. The sound of the "tsssssssst" when water sprays off of juicy oranges in the commercials would lead me to belief that mist would be a happy blue. You know.....that nice juicy tssssssss noise. mmmmmmmm oranges....

I just got the m70-fe5 from FS. When I powered it up the very first thing I noticed was the chirping and screeching modem-like sound from the power supply... which is quite loud and annoying, especially when you're trying to concentrate on your work. The noise changes as I move the mouse. I don't need that kind of feedback. I have no dead pixels on the screen, by the way. Everything else with the laptop seems ok so far (haven't tried burning dvd's or cd's yet). Maybe the power supply noise is coming from the inductors/capacitors/transformer which have not been potted with that wax-like substance you find when you open up a PC power supply. I went in to FS and listened to the power supply of the m70's they had on display (you have to put your ear to the power supply in the store to hear the noise)... and yup, the one's in-store also screeched and chirped.

Does anyone else have this problem with their power supply on the m70 or on other toshiba models?

I just bought the M50-MX5 and I don't get the high pitched modem like noise from the AC adapter anymore. And the noise from the cpu is much lower.

hope it helps

By the way I returned two M70-FE5, and both where having the same power supply noise.

I called Toshiba tech support and was told that the power supply was not designed to be making that noise. The rep had not heard of that problem before. I know of 4 m70's that have this noisy power supply problem. The one I just got, the one I heard in the store, and the 2 that Noheaven had. So, I'll have to return mine. Too bad, it's hard to find a laptop with no dead pixels and this one was perfect.
yeah that is kinda sad but at the same time they do happen, because i have actually never had a dead pixel on either my p20 or my xps which replaced it.
The grey looks drab and business-like, which I think is great.

Less attention for my laptop, and since I already have too much attention considering how kickass it is, that's a good thing.

And I love it more than the other colours anyhow.
