57C GPU idle - Page 2

im stiting here 55, my gpu fan is set to come on at 35, then spin up to high at 48, and its always on high, currently in windows sitting here browsing the web @ 500c 1300, idling at 55 does seem a bit high.

I too am idling at 55C right now. I am not using the Dell drivers. Is this bad?

Props to Doc Caliban where I read about propping up the back of the XPS for better air intake. This reduces fan noise and cools the cpu/gpu better.

I'm not sure if this was what did it or whether because I cut the AA down on MOH from 8x to 2x, but my temps dropped a lot - from 56C idle to 53C - from 85C peak to 69C under load. That's 16C difference. Huge.

So other than the vacuuming out crap and shooting compressed air (short bursts of it) into the vents, try the elevating the back method. I'm gonna get some erasers and hot glue gun them to the bottom of the lappy.

I used 77.70 driver before and after the test. The only variable was the degree of AA in the game and the elevation of the rear of the lappy. The room temp was about the same 76-78F.

I downloaded the new 78.50 from laptopvideo2go. Gonna test it out. May report back.

yea my lappy is propped up about an inch with a ppacific breeze cooler and that blowin even colder air under my XPS2 into the intake fans. i thought ut should idle at atleast 50C with the cooler and added elevation but i guess my room is about 80F, damn college dorms. i bblasted compressed air into the pacific breeze to clean it out and my lappy and now with the cooler on high and my fans on high my cpu temp is 36C and gpu temp is 54C while i type this.

i really dont wanna unscre like 30 friggin screws to clean the heatsinks but eh, i might have too. and btw, Norton sucks.

You probably don't need to. If your room temp is 80F, then it makes sense that your CPU temp is about 36C and your GPU 54C on idle. I undervolted and I get 30C and 53 GPU idle with 77F room temp. Ambient temp makes a lot of diff. Also, check your room temp after gaming for a while, it'll go up a few.

I ripped my XPS2 open, and i saw a nice thick line of dust on the CPU heat sink.. after i cleaned everything off i was back to idling the CPU at like 38-40ish, down from like 50ish..

38-40ish Thats still pretty high for CPU idling. Are you using Maximum Performance at all time if so that might explain it. My CPU idle around 30-33 w/o undervolting . With undervolting my cpu idle around 28-30(usually stay at 28). GPU idle at 46-47 after cleaning the dust off the heat pipe for me. But before cleaning the Dust off the Heatpipe my Gpu was also idling 55-58 using forcware driver. Dell Driver my GPU idle at 52-55 (before cleaning dust). After cleaning the temperature drop from 5-7 c at idle for both CPU and GPU which is awesome.

how did you clean off the dust?

Just take the laptop apart and your going to see the dust being stuck on to the heatsink. Just use anything to wipe it off then close the laptop back up and wallah your gpu and cpu temp. will drop dramatically.
