Ubuntu 5.10 + i9300 = Amazingly everything works! - Page 2

Mine hung during install at that very point. I removed my Audigy 2zs and rebooted and no problem. There must be some problem booting with the Audigy 2zs (at least for me). I will try to get it working, but until then, I just leave the card out.

If you have an extra audio device hooked up(as per your sig), you might try disconnecting it and rebooting.

Not working after first nights work: Atheros 5006xs, SD card, lights.

I personally use gentoo which works good for me, I had no problems getting everything working on my XPS gen 2 in linux.

Audigy 2 zx notebook is a more recent though you need atleast kernel 2.6.14 and also pretty new alsa drivers, I had to use the CVS the last time i checked (months ago)

Everything works? I wouldn't say so. What about card reader?

no clue whether that works, I have never used it, in linux or windows.

Card reader works with a recent patch to the kernel. Credit and criticism goes to the link, not to me: http://rtr.ca/dell_i9300/kernel/latest/

Update: Dapper Drake Flight 6 (2.6.15 kernel) recognizes my Audigy and via ndiswrapper, my atheros 5006xs. I have not gotten sound to actually play through the Audigy yet, but it no longer hangs with the audigy inserted.

Still working Bluetooth, weird USB hub problem, SD card reader. I have yet to try Xgl.

I am confident that I can get the SD card reader working and there are lots of posts about people who did. The same goes for bluetooth except for others, there was no problem but for me it is struggling.

All three problem areas are not a big deal for me, so I think I am going to stick with the Dapper Drake install even though it is beta. Since it is beta, I can't recommend it, but I just wanted you guys to know that it works pretty well so far.

Update 14APR2006: Got the Audigy 2zs working just fine after some updates from Ubuntu. Nothing I did. Also installed the latest nVidia drivers and that is working, but not recognizing it as a moblie card (i.e. Fn-F8 doesn't work). Can use external monitor but not on the DVI connector. Bluetooth recognizes that my mouse is there, but I can't get it to work.

Can someone confirm that Audigy works under Ubuntu, please. I am going to switch to linux but quick google search did not give me straight answer.
TIA

it will work in any distro as long as the kernel is above 2.6.14, and as far as the alsa, you can always update the alsa drivers after so I again, it will work in any distro.

It works fine for me unless I pull it out of a runnnig system, which you probably should not do anyway. No problem for me in windows when I do that, but Dapper does not like it.

Dapper is still beta, but uses 2.6.15 kernel and didn't like the audigy on first load, but after updating, it works fine.

Dapper has been good for me as long as I don't mess with compiz/Xgl too much. It works great, but there are a lot of changes going on with it and it tends to break things. I would not use Dapper if I did not have a second system for backup/recovery use.

A good option might be to compile the 2.6.16 kernel into whatever distro you use. I would expect that and new drivers as mentioned above would work for you in Breezy. There are a few posts on the Ubuntu forums about compiling your own kernel. Also check the wiki for supported laptops and you will find a guilde for the 9300/xps that has some extra patches for SD card reader and performance.

I installed Suse 10 lastnight.. By far.. This is the best linux distro ever.

It found EVERYTHING.

Video: GeForce 7800GTX with Hardware accellration
Screen: Running at 1440x900
Mouse: The Scrolls on the touchpad even work
Network: It found both the wireless and the integraded networks cards, even durring install so you can do a live update durring the install over your wireless.
Sound: No problems, and get this... It has a seperate volume control for the sub woofer.
Applications: Plays DVD's, MP3's with ease. It will even run quicktime movies from within Mozilla...
Bluetooth: Yup
Hybernation/Sleep: Yup, that works too
Power: Knows when it's on battery or A/C.
Speedstep: Yes, will throttle down the CPU when not busy

And I really had to do nothing to make the above stuff work.. It just worked, no configuration nessessary. No seperate RPM's, no building drivers.. It's all included.

The only thing that is not working is the volume buttons on the front. Thoes are probaly part of the dell quickset program which you can't get for Linux
Oh.. and there is no way to change the LED's from what is set in the BIOS, again quickset is needed for that.

I would almost contemplate keeping this as my everyday OS if it wern't for the fact I am addicted to WoW.

Simple: Use 'xev' to find the event id of pushing each button then use 'xmodmap' to map each button to the desired result (mute, vol-, vol+, etc...).

Since the drivers included with each distro are updated enough to install straight from the cd/dvd without any work needing to be done I can't see how 'it works' makes for a great distro (after all Windows works but I don't see anybody call that 'great').
