Another gaming laptop recommendation thread

Looking for high powered gaming laptop, I perfer to save and buy something second hand for under $2000. Suggestions? I have in mind Sager 9860 and I've heard of the Dell XPS but historically I've always mistrusted Dell.

I noticed some of the Sagers in the 9000's had the 256MB GeForce Go 6800, then I noticed the new ones have the "Ultra" version. Which one should I be aiming for?

Is it worth getting the 7200rpm Notebook hard drives as opposed to the regular 5400?

I currently use xga. If you have super high resolution on one of these 17inch screens, such as 1680 X 1050, can you lower the resolution for games in order to get higher FPS (without the usual distortion you get if you lower an xga lcd monitor to only 800x600?

For gaming performance, can a Pentium M match a Pentium P4 HT? (Assuming both are the latest chips)

Hyperthreading doesn't always help. So the Pentium M would be faster than a same speed Pentium 4 with HT. I don't want to google it though.

Hyperthreading won't be much help during gaming -- in fact, it might hurt.

I'd stay away from anything Pentium 4. The thing simply *drinks* power (meaning it takes a very bulky machine to deal with all the resulting heat), and is no faster than the Turion 64, Athlon 64, or Pentium M.

plus with a bigger cache size, the PMs should run games as good if not better than P4 without, as Entropius said, the huge heatsinks and massive power sucking and (insert synonym for big here) hot laptop.

look into the sager 5320. It can be pretty powerful if you customize it real nice.

PM are so much more efficent than the P4s; except for video editing, but for games I would probably go with the PM unless I could get a rocking AMD system.

The Pentium-Ms are gaming monsters. It is perhaps what they are best at.

The fastest Pentium M is about the same as the fastest P4 for gaming, but draws a fraction of the power.

Remember, there is a reason why the P4's architechture is being replaced over the next few years by the PM's architechture accross Intel's entire product line, from mobile to server.

Dell 9300 with 256MB NVIDIA GEFORCE GO 6800
post #12 of 12
well if you want absolute power you would aim for the newer nvidia 7800 line which is currently in the Dell xps and Alienware 7700. If your looking for power but not super highend then the 6800 ultra would be the next. Then if your looking for a graphics card that will play all games out AT THIS MOMENT then the regualr 6800 should be fine.
