hi

i'm thinking of getting a 5660
but i'm frankly not interested in a win XP experience

can we install win98 SE on this laptop ??
where do we get the drivers for this OS
the review says the CD came with drivers for 2000/XP only

any ideas ??

thx

i already have a copy of win98 with me
trying to save a few $$$ here i guess

what i really meant was - does sager supply win98 compatible drivers for the h/w (modem/lan etc etc) in the 5660

Yes, the CD comes with Win98, Win98 SE, Win 2K, Win ME, and Win XP drivers. Sorry, I'll add that to the review, I didn't think to mention it because I never deal with 98 or ME really any more and Sager doesn't offer those operating systems.

That's like fitting a Ferrari with bicycle tires IMO. Save up a little and get yourself XP (and make evil Gates a little richer).

to be very honest - i dont like Xp's colourful interface

i started out with DOS so u can imagine what a superfluous GUI feels to me - lol

as for stability - well, with MS u never know
i think i'll go with win98SE till i get a win2000 pro

I didn't think XP would be worth the upgrade either, but trust me, IT IS. XP Pro is incredible and you can set the desktop to look like the classic windows 98/2000 interface so the colorfulness isn't really an issue. There are a lot of little fixes that are just convenient. I strongly recommend it. Especially considering you can run applications in compatability mode for many previous versions of windows and DOS.

You can make it as grim as the death reaper if you want. You can customize the color of virtually every element on your desktop and in most applications. Like the toolbars, the boxes, the windows, the browser etc.. If you wanted to, you could make everything look grey.

Like beepster said, you can make it look like windows 98 and in some cases, using the "classic" modes, you can navigate through windows the old way.

The stability of XP cannot be compared to crash-prone 98.

Ha yes, a death reeper, great way to put it. My definition of "death reeper" mode is when you right click on My Computer and go to advanced>perfomance settings and then clicking on "adjust my computer for the best perfrmance." This removes all the "frillie edges" (though I personally like to leave the "common tasks in folders" option enabled) Even on a fast computer (2.4 ghz pentium from experience and probably a 2.8 as well) there will be a noticable difference in the speed ofnormal tasks on your computer. It looks like windows 98 but maintains the stability of XP. IMHO this is the best way to go.
You should seriously consider making the switch to XP. But of course there is always the money situation... if you have the money, go for it!! Just my two cents.

As others said, it IS more stable, I know, I use XP

Also, you can disable the fancy GUI stuff, but personally I like it. And I too started with DOS, I don't see what makes it much different than starting with Win 95, Unix, whatever.

My point however is that XP IS worth the uprade.

ok ok - i get the point

i'm not trying to put down XP
i know its more stable

but the fact remains that it still will throw fatal exceptions once in a while - i mean if i didnt - how would MS come up with a newer OS - lol

correct me if i'm wrong - but u can run pretty much everything on win98SE that u can run on XP
but the amount of system resources pulled by XP is much greater

i ran 98SE on a pentium 120/32mb ram and a 270mb Hdd - while they recommend at least a P3/128 mb for XP

my point is - isnt it better to use an OS which is less system hungry - leaving more resources for the applications that run on it ??

also - some old....... ok ancient - lol - DOS progs/games of mine use the conventional memory for startup and not the extended mem - i think they wouldnt run in XP compatibility modes
i had this problem in 98SE as well - but i could go down to the pure DOS mode and put things in extended mem that windows was putting in the conventional mem
is it still possible to do that in XP ??

once again - no offence intended to XP fans
just thinking whether i could get along with not spending a few $$ - lol

sid, I'm not an XP fan. I don't like Bill gates or any of his crap software. But we have no choice really. I don't have the time to learn the intricacies of using Linux, so I go along with the rest of the sheep and am force-fed Microsoft garbage.

But the facts are the facts, XP is a world of improvement over win98. It is NOT a memory hog in comparison. In fact, I've upgraded from Win98 on more than one machine (PIIIs) and in all cases the machine performed better. A lot of things run faster, everything runs more stable. In fact the only thing that I can think of where Win98 beats XP is how fast the PC shuts down.

The most critical resource that you need for XP is RAM (for slower computers that is). It is odd that on a Sager forum you're worried about resources. These laptops are so powerful that they won't even feel a difference between XP and Win98 cause they have way more than enough power and resources to run them optimally.

If its an issue of not wanting to pay extra for an XP upgrade, I understand you. Otherwise, I don't think its logical to prefer Win 98 over XP. Best of luck,

badluckboy
