1 - PC are CHEAPER - No their not - A Decent Desktop from a major OEM with a 20" LCD is about the price of an iMac, a Quad Core Opertron workstation is similarly priced to a quad core mac.
2 - PCs give you more options in terms of OS and other Software - True - but there are software packages avaliable for macs that you can't get for PC's such as Quark Express.
3 - you can build a PC to your own spec - True
4 - PCs are FASTER - Certainly in the laptop department, but the G5 is a fast processor. Also because macs have been using Dual Processors for some time the OS is written to take advantage of this, and many of the applications are multithreaded, wheras most PC programs have not been written with multithreading in mind and derive no real benefit from dual core/processor systems.
5 - you can GAME on a PC if you choose to do so - You can game on Macs if you choose to, why you would choose to is a better question.
6 - large user community for when you need help - The mac Community isn't exactly small. Sites like macrumours are easily as active as this site (at least in the technical support sections)
7 - competition keeps prices down and development up - Well macs have to compete with the PC world don't they.
8 - FreeBSD is meant to be FREE! (not $100 OS X) - OSX is not FreeBSD, I guess charging for SUSE linux is wrong too.
9 - Systems come with more features - Like? Flash card readers??? Floppy Drives? I'm afraid I don't quite follow you here.
10 - new technology gets introduced on PCs first - What, like Firewire, or complete adaption to USB. So what if it takes 2 or 3 months for apple to put something like PCI Express (which currently
has negligable benefits anyway. I mean what major new innovation in the PC world are macs actually missing?
Apple is switching to Intel Processors because of a lack of decent low power parts on IBM's part. As has already been said the G4 is pretty pathetic by modern standards, and the G5 is about as much of a mobile chip as the P4 (the Powermac G5 has a watercooling system for gods sake)
And enough of these crappy car analogies. Its a bloody computer.
|So say we have for example, a laptop, a sager 9890 with 1 GB DDR 533 ram, pentium 670, and the 7800gtx, what mac would beat that in ability, or at least come in ~ the same level of performance?

Well it wouldn't, specs wise that laptop kicks the pants off the Powerbook G4, a line which is getting very long in the tooth - however the apple laptop wouldn't weigh about 12 pounds and have half an hour of battery life so it isn't really a fair comparism. If you friend wants an Apple Laptop and dosen't need it now then I would seriously advise him to wait until the intel macs come along.
