Though when I first had it there was this clicking sound that came from the hd every 5 second. This can be easily solved by using Centrino Hardware Control or Notebook Hardware Control. Just set it to quiet 128 and never spin down or 254 maximum performance and the Hitachi 7k100 will stop clicking. Comparing temp. I would say Hitachi is cooler than the fujitsu and out perform it by a wide margin. I hope this help
very helpful!! i like what i hear "out perform it by a wide margin"

excellent!! now to sell the 40gb 5400rpm fujitsu...

I've read some benchmarks with all of them.

First of all, don't get the 'e' models. They're meant for blade servers, and so they don't have power management. In a notebook, a few ms to bring the drive up a few power levels isn't a big deal, but in a server it is. The 'e' models aren't going to get you any tangible performance benefit, but will suck more power.

As for the various models, as a comparison the average read speed of the 7k60 is about 35MB/s, and the 7k100 is about 40MB/s

for a comparison, the 5400RPM Seagate 120GB drive is 32MB/s, so while increasing density does indeed increase speed, the rotational speed is still more important for raw transfer rates. You are not going to get a faster transfer rate by going from 7200 to 5400 based on benchmarks.

Seagate is slower than Hitachi and more expensive too!

In fact, I personally think the most reliable hard drives are the Fujitsu made. I never seen one non working.

I got a 7k100 60gb on my laptop which I replaced the WD Scoprio 60 Gb(2mb cache, 5200rpm). I changed drives and setup everyhting EXACLY the same. When palying WoW though, it seemed much betetr with the WD drive wich I find kidna weird...but then again WD does have good buidl quality but spec wise :/. By benchmarks the 7200rpm are alot superior so I'm goign to have a look at it...but thoguht it might be woerht mentioning...

Thanks for explaining that difference! That helps me decide; and I think the "E" models are more expensive anyway.

i just got my 7k100 60gb in today. threw it on my external 2.5" usb enclosure and copied the files over. swapped it in and it went great! needed to change boot.ini to reflect partition appropriately. excellent! speedy speedy speedy!!

Sweet. What did you use to copy? Acronis, Ghost, ?? I have used Acronis before but on the HP laptop I had, the destination (new) drive would not boot. Is that because of the boot.ini? I just thought it would image everything, including the current boot.ini...? I ended up just doing a standard boot-to-CD reimage using the HP restore disc.

well it depends how you have it setup. on my old drive, i had the dell diagnostic partition as the first one, then the windows partition, then my data partition. i just formatted a few weeks ago so my operating system is still running nicely. im personally a big antagonist of partition magic but i figured what the hell so i installed that. because i wanted to shrink my windows partition anyway and have a bigger data partition. so i copied over the windows partition to the drive and then shrank it from 30gb to 15. then i swapped the drives and tried to boot and itd die. so i thought about it and realized that i didnt adjust my boot.ini to account for the fact that the windows drive is now the first partition since i didnt copy over the dell parition so i had to modify the boot.ini to reflect it. then it booted right up and much much faster than ive ever seen it at that. then i created another partition and copied over the other files in windows.

damn it this harddrive is so loud. i wonder if itll get better. three of my friends have 7k60's, and out of those, two of them are really quiet, with only the third having that clicky noise. mine does too. hmm.. i keep thinking it's my external harddrive about to die because it's a new noise, but then i realize it's my 7k100. grr.

it's fast though!
Is it loud to the point of distraction at work or school? That's weird that it would be SO loud... Otherwise, do you feel the performance gain is worth putting up with the noise??
As far as I have seen the 7K100 is pretty quiet...you sure its the hard drive and not something stuck in your fan?

ya i'm sure. i mean it's not really exactly loud. it's just that my old harddrive was fairly silent and this one sounds more like a desktop harddrive. it's not a big deal to me at all. i just found it interesting that it'd be that loud

also i find it interesting that there seem to be inconsistencies in drive sound levels among the older 7k60's. all three were 60gb. the two that were quiet were in dells (i6000 and i8600) while the noisier one was in an abs. i guess it might have to do with the abs chassis but then again i have a i6000 with my 7k100 and the noise level is about the same as my friend's in the abs

wow are you kidding me. newegg just got the 7k100 60gb on sale for 129.99

I also just got my 7K100 100GB, and find it awfully loud. Even with Acoustic Management set to quiet, I find the clicking sounds annoying when my notebook fan is not running...

Anybody else with some experience? Maybe not all 7K100 drives are equal. I can still return mine...
