9860 Fan constantly on?

Since the first day of purchase, the 9860 fan will come on about a minute or so after I boot up, and it will stay on until I shut down Windows. This even happens if I let it rest on the desktop which idles at 0-1% CPU Usage with only 15 running processes. I have two questions regarding this:

1] Is this degrading the hardware faster than it would if it were working properly?

2] What are all my options for fixing it?

fn+f2 keys

Two things come to mind.

1). What is the units internal temperature? Is it too high or higher than those of others.

2). How long has this been going on?

Fn+F2 didn't do anything, but thanks for the response.

1). According to mobilemeter, the temperature idles at around 40° C at the desktop and playing Doom 3 (the most hardware demanding game I have) for thirty minutes the temp never went above 50° C. From what I have read these temperatures are normal, but the fan coming on idling at the desktop is not.

2). This has been going on since the day I bought it which was about 10 months ago. My friend made a comment a while back which prompted me to go finally seek support.

I appreciate any support/advice you guys can give me. Thanks!

On the 8790, the fans turn off completely only after the machines temp is lower than 36C. The rest of the time they vary in speed - except when I am using "Turbo Mode" which causes all fans to spin at maximum speed.

I think denn 76 has the idea that you should persue

oh yeah check the bios first, just in case u do have the newest bios and firmware. if u do it should be a simple fix theres a setting where u can choose either continous or (i believe also) automatic. it might just be set to continous.

It looks as if the thread denn_76 posted solved my problem, as I updated my bios and set the fans to automatic. I really appreciate the speed and the relevance of your answers and thank you for your help!
