Hell, just keep the notebook unopened in the box and use your desktop. That's what I do and the notebook still looks like it did the day it arrived at my door.

I've been using my laptop now since June and I typically spend 8 to 10 hours a day on it. Likely 2 to 3 (or more) hours gaming each day without an external keyboard and my laptop palmrest is as clean and unmarked as the day I got it. I bought a container of 100 Fellowes - Anti-Static Screen Cleaning Wipes from BestBuy or some place and use them on the screen, palmrest and top cover maybe once a week. I dont know why so many people have a problem with their palmrests getting black as mine still looks like new.. and it gets A LOT of use.

Is this simply dirt, scratches or wear of the palmrest paint/finish?

Actually I think it has a lot to do with the pH level of your bodily fluids and sweat which varies from person to person, but even from a scientific approach this sounds nasty so I'm not going to attack this beast.

But it's very possible you never get your palmrest dirty and also DONT need vaseline. lol

What you want to clean plastic with is a "PLASTIC CLEANER or PLASTIC POLISH" 3m and Cadillac Plastics have some very good ones that work excellent on repairing scratches and providing a protective polish that should help with wear and tear.
You can find these products at restaurant supply stores and at automotive supply stores.

You are quite right, and without regular cleaning these oils will deteriorate the plastic surface and/or discolor it. Washing your hands and using clean hands on your laptop will also help. There are also laptop keyboard covers from www.protectcovers.com that work very well.

other people tend to sweat all over my stuff, but i can use a mouse for hours and it will still stay dry. i dont even let my brother use my ps2 controller cause he sweats on it so much...

does this mean that i wont suffer from the same worn palmerest problem a lot of you guys do?

I just use the same stuff that I use for the screen. Monster Screenclean and the cloth that comes with it. My hands are large and they sweat. It keeps my palmrest looking great.

I don't use anything, then again I don't have any marks (and this laptop is in almost constant use)...
