RAM for the Dell I9300?

I just recently bought the I9300 just today. I planned to buy RAM for it so i didn't exactly buy 2 GB of ram that will basically waste $200 (you get the point)... so I planned to buy RAM from Newegg... You can tell that I do not want to waste money when you can get them cheaper... So can someone exactly tell me what specs are I need to choose the right RAM?

Do you mean what type of RAM should you get? If so, you can go to crucial.com and select your system, and it will show you what type of RAM you need. It's slightly more expensive than newegg, but at least you know that what you're getting will be compatible.

Ah, Thanks bro. Really appreciate the fast answer

I use Kingston 6000A PC4200 2X512 533 MHZ and very happy with this RAM.

Another question I have is that of what "type" as in DDR or DDR2 200 Pin SODIMM.

Go to www.Crucial.com and use the Crucial Memory Advisor
Choose 'Dell' from the 'Select a Manufacture' drop down and click Go.
Choose 'Inspiron' from the 'Select your Dell product line' and click Go.
Choose 'Inspiron 9300' from the 'Select your Dell Inspiron Model' and click Go.
You can now choose what size modules you wish to buy from the recommended list. They will all work in the 9300.

As for the type you are looking for DDR2-533 PC2-4200.

If you are looking for the 1GB modules then this is what you want.

Hope this helps!

I was wondering if this is the RAM that would be useable... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820208312

Yes, that ram will be fine. Be sure to run memtest86 on it overnight.

I just threw 2 sticks in my m170 and it's running flawlessly. I ran memtest on it for 3 hours and plan on running it overnight tonight. Seems to be good ram, I haven't gamed with it yet though. Nice price and speed.

2 sticks of 1 gb Transcend from Newegg.com

0 problems.

I'm using Kingston. Any DDR2 533 (PC2 4200)
with Cas Latency 4 should be fine. Unless you're overclocking your cpu, you really don't need to get any higher rated memory. Also, running memtest is a good idea, but maybe for a couple of hours to test the entire memory; doing it overnight seems like overkill to me. Good luck.

Also, even though the machine is dual channel, you don't need to have the same amount in each. You can put 1 Gig in one channel and leave whatever that came with it in the other and save some money if your don't absolutely have to have 2 gig. Other than BF2, not sure what app needs 2 gigs yet.

The 9300 does not use dual channel memory at all. Also the ram timings (CAS) is immaterial since the BIOS (i think) runs it at one speed and its not changed regardless of what the ram is able to do. This is my understanding of it anyways. So basically ANY ram matching DDR2-533 PC2-4200 will run the same.

I thought that the 9300 did use dual channel ram

Its marketing hype! Yes you can put dual channel ram in the 9300 but you get NO advantage over say you put in 2 mismatched ram modules in it. Its just as fast either way.
Edit: This is a good thing

WHAT??? Is this true? How can Dell possibly advertise that the laptops have Dual RAM channels, if in fact they don't? Surely someone would sue their ass?

So I think it must be true. Whether or not it makes a big difference performance wise is another matter...

Both 9300 and 6000 DO USE DUAL CHANNEL RAM. Performance gains are not big, nothing like desktop dual channel, but it is definitely faster than single channel, although not much. Download Everest Home edition (free) from Lavalys and see for yourself.

Blah.. My Mistake, poor wording.. I didn't mean that it doesn't use, support or take dual channel memory. There's just no useful gain for 99% of us as any performance boost wouldn't be noticed.

This is correct. The performance gain is minimal though. It is not noticiable with games for instance. Most people think there is no advantage at all.
