Is 2 Gigs of Ram Overkill?

I currently have 1 gig of ram in my 1.8ghz turion laptop. I was wondering if I would even notice a difference if I upgrade to 2 gigs for normal use? Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks, Rob

You won't notice a difference unless you're doing some HEAVY gaming.

unless you are planning to run 2 games + photoshop + VirtualDUB + Dreamweaver + Firefox + other crap all at once, i doubt you need 2gb.

The manufacturer is usually not important in matching RAM sticks, it's one of the gimmicks retailers often use to get customers to get those "premium matched kits". Just STAY AWAY from the less known manufacturers, and you will be fine.

For the best results for your money, you would want to match the bandwidth, such as DDR333 or DDR400; match the CAS latency; if you really want to get technical, try to match all of the timing specs such as tRCD, tRP, and tRAS. But for the most part, both sticks will only run at what the lower of the two sets of SPD timings would allow; so matching new RAM to the same specs would generally save you dough for the same performance.

I dont do anything extremely strenous but I do run multiple programs and game occassionaly. I am basically thinking that I plan on upgrading to vista anyway when it comes out and I'm sure that would benefit from more ram so maybe I will just buy it now and I wont have to worry about a ram upgrade for the life of the laptop.

here is a list of ram companies on my trusted list if you do want to buy:
Kingston (use kingston myself in both my desktop and laptop)
Corsair (my flash drive is Corsair Voyager 1GB)
Micron / Crucial (use microns in my Thinkpad)
Viking Ram (heard good reviews)

I still say no, unless you surprise me by bringing new factors to the table... this means that the opinion is based on what I understand of what you said first. Well, I would save the money and buy something else.

I don't know if this is just me, but I'm not too much into future-proofing and that kind of stuff. Time teached me a very good lesson (the better: on others acts, not mine) on all this 64 bit future-proof argumentation. I'm more and more convinced, for example, that by the time 64 bit will be truly a standard (not a niche), I will have another notebook...

So, unless you have a very good reason to put $100+ (just saw on newegg) on something you won't even feel (or barely will) the difference, at least for a year or so, I would save it. You can always upgrade RAM in the future. And considering things are going to be cheaper with time...

edited: i buy if i need it, only if i need it. I leave future proof and norms to people that have spare money...

The only reason I have 2 GB in mine is because I do quite a bit of 3D modelling with heavy texturing. Otherwise I would stay with 1 GB: it was enough even for plenty of Photoshop work, although some may rightfully argue what is considered "plenty" in Photoshop world

Is "All Components" memory any good?
