Took delivery today of my new 4005wlmi XP home notebook. So thought I would add my first moments and impressions with this machine for the benefit of others debating whether to take the plunge
First thing you notice is the box itself, with all the branding etc instictively you know if they have taken this much care of the packaging, whats inside is going to be very good indeed.
So taking the contents out of the packaging and for sure no dissapointments here. Bar none this is certainly the most elegant and best looking notebook PC ever
It's so breathtakingly stunning that it simply forces you to be ultra careful about ensuring you dont scatch or mark the exterior.
Opening up the screen and again the delights continue with the rubberised palm rest coating and the curved keyboard, everything about this just oozes luxury and certainly on this machines looks alone its a credit to the Ferrari badge.
Starting the Notebook up into Windows, in my case XP home edition you are greeted by Michael schumachers f2004 and its exhaust note, which for me as a Ferrari Formula One fan is an absolute gem.
So far I have only just completed the setup and factory back up disk creation routines that pop up onto the screen to configure.
Briefly I will mention some of those concerns that are documented on these Forums.
The Fan Noise - Yes its always on, and it is not whisper quiet as some of the Pentium M machines that I have checked out in High street stores before buying this machine. But its not a mechanical sound as such, just a whooshing that you can associate with air being circulated. I would say its slightly louder than the Playstation 2 I own, but no where near the decibel levels of Desktop PC's. In fact we own a 3 year old Targa laptop with an AMD Athlon 1800+ processor and it equates to the fan sound on that which again is constantly running. However I do not believe it will hinder the pleasure of working on this machine, because if you utilise any applications, games, audio \visual etc with sound then you will not notice the fan. Its only if you were in a very quiet environment that the fan noise could become an iratation. If ACER figure some way of controlling the fan speed in the future for existing owners then this may be a bonus.
Speakers - Yes it has two ! The sound is not as low as some may suggest in fact for a laptop it is fairly good in the levels. Its the quality of the sound that dissapoints
There are no bass tones, so its a tinny sound and pushing the sound medium - high volume produces a lot of distortion. Anticipating this I had already put on order an Audigy 2 Laptop sound PCMCIA card so will advise on this when it arrives.
Heat - Well so far the Notebook has been on for approx 1 1\2 hours and here is where perhaps the fact the fan is always on counts, because there are no "Hotspots" at all, so its a thumbs up on this
Screen - Lovely high resolution screen ! I had reservations about either going for a Notebook with a glossy "brightview" type screen or a high resolution traditional matte screen which is on this notebook. I have to say the fears are unfounded. The screen on the 4005 is rich in definition, well lit and very good viewing at all angles, There is no question in my opinion this is a far better choice than the lower res glossy screens of other notebooks.
I haven't yet tried the infamous bluetooth mouse, so cannot comment on this yet.
To sum up then on my first impressions ? . This is a purchase that I am well happy I made, for those who are still not sure whether to buy or not? Do it because I believe you will be glad you made the right choice in buying

. Had some trouble with mouse since it was not always detedcted and sometimes needed the maneuvre of taking out the batteries which always did the trick. Now after turning off the WLAN from autoboot i get really fast performance on sytem up and no problems with the mouse, since now i would make the conclusion that turning on the mouse too soon was the cause for it not beeing detected.
