5680 Running WinXP Device Mgr says I have a USB Device not working

Hi there... when I look at the Device Manager panel under Windows XP everything looks fine except that under "Other Devices" it lists "USB Device" and has a big yellow exclamation point over it indicating that it isn't working. I have no idea what this is since all of my USB ports work fine and I believe that I've installed all of the drivers that came with the machine. When I look at the Properties for the device it has the following info:

Device Type: Other Device
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: Location 0 (USB Device)
Device Status:
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver

This is a 5680 running Windoxs XP sp1

I don't think this is hurting anything but it's just really annoying

Any advice is greatly appreciate!

Thanks,
Kirk

Did you install all the updates - you have to have sp1 installed before installing any usb drivers you may want to use

I just recieved my 5680 a few days ago and just finished installing Windows XP with SP1 last night and I have the same issue:
Under Universal Serial Bus controller in the Device Manager there is an unknown device listed. When I check the properties for the device it states that there are no drivers installed for this device. When I try and update the driver for the device the Hardware Update Wizard states that it could not find a better match for my hardware than the software I currently have installed.

I installed SP1 and all Windows updates prior to installing any drivers.
So what gives?
Any help would be welcome.

Where on your list of hardware does it appear? (sometimes you can go through update driver and install the correct hardware by picking it out of a list. But you have to know what you are missing) Did you install the Sager Drivers in order? (If the chipset is not installed the computer won't know what some of your hardware is) Did you install the drivers for the scratchpad and keyboard? ( these are ps2 devices but could be mistaken for usb is the drives are not installed.) Do you have anything connected to the 5680. (Seems like a dumb question but you never know)
It definately sounds like you may have missed a driver installation.

Paxman is right, the installation order of the drivers is important.

Well... found out what it was. I hadn't installed the Bluetooth driver. Went out to the Sager site, got the driver and installed it and that got rid of the error... plus now I've got Bluetooth... I'd actually forgotten that I had ordered Bluetooth with the laptop

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Though you've already resolved it, this is how I fixed it:

Pop in the CD that came with the machine, then under devices go to update driver. Have it search the CD for the drivers. This fixed it for me, if I recall correctly.

At least for me it looked like the driver disc that came with it had the drivers on it, just necver installed them. Though never looked into it, so not sure.

After speaking with Tom at PCTorque, I think I have found the source of the problem. Tom asked me if Bluetooth was installed. I replies yes, because I did install the drivers and "MY BLUETOOTH PLACES" is listed on the desktop and in My computer. However if I click on either of these, I get an error stating:

'Bluetooth device not found. Please verify that your Bluetooth device is properly connected and turned on.'

I was under the impression that the Bluetooth was installed internally, so I assume that it is connected. So, how do I turn 'on' Bluetooth?

I called the Sager Tech support line and I am still waiting for a call back.

That's odd... I just downloaded and installed the newest drivers from the Sager website (http://www.sagernotebook.com/pages/tech_sfwrdls.html#1) and it worked fine... if you look in Device Manager do you have an entry for Bluetooth Devices? Mine has that entry and says "Billionton USB Bluetooth Device" for the device name. If you've installed the drivers and it isn't detecting the device I'd be inclined to think that the bluetooth adaptor was not installed in that machine... either that or it's malfunctioning.

The driver I used can be found at http://www.sagernotebook.com/ftp/misc/blue142.exe
** Note: This driver is for Windows 2000/XP and was released on 11/26/2003

Finally!!!

The dreaded 'Unknown Device' aka 'Bluetooth' is now installed and functioning properly.
How, you ask. Quite simple, so simple in fact that I feel like banging my head into a wall repeatedly for not thinking of it sooner.

Solution = fn + F12 = Enable Bluetooth Device. DOH!!!!

Now that everything is all good, I have but one small question: How do I get rid of this 'MY Bluetooth Places' icon from my desktop?
I can't delete the @#%$ thing.

Thanks to everybody for thier assistance.
