what are your suggestion for operating system? have xp pro installed by sager? anywhere I can get it for cheaper than the $125 sager provides? are there benefits for me to buy it separately to install it myself? Is xp pro over xp home, and are the benefits of xp pro not worth the price jump to xp pro? and what about microsoft backing the os? does it have to be retail? any advice would be appreciated...

I Have The 3880, And I Installed Xp Pro Myself. Newegg Has Xp Pro For $138 + Sh. I Think The Oem Is Fine. If You Buy Separately You Will Have The Cd And A Ms Product Key.so You Can Reinstall If You Want. If You Install Yourself, You Must Put The Drives In From Sager In Order Very Important.

XP Pro is more large network oriented and has slightly more options as far as security is concerned. MS says they will not support an OEM product see here (http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=116425). I am a Network Admin and I run XP Home (at home) simply because it is cheaper. If you are a student (college) you can look at the student bookstore and get XP Pro for about 99.00 (That is what is was at my college). Also, XP Home will not see a WIN2K or WIN2K3 server at all, can actually kill the network as it is not designed to handle it (designed for workgroups).

so...

so just go with xp home until a time comes when i connect to a larger network? nevertheless, does it really make a difference if having home on a large network instead of pro?

The only reason I could think to have XP Pro on a personal laptop is if you take it to work and use it there. Workgroups (home networks) are generally only 2-10 systems large. If you have more than 10 systems at home A)start running a dedicated server B) switch to XP Pro & C)send some of your money to me, I need a couple more desktops (have 4 right now).

Please to expand on order of drivers

I am going to be setting up 3880 from blank drive ie no OS for my boss, RCI stated " You Must Put The Drives In From Sager In Order Very Important "
could you please inform me of what order or better yet direct me to directions on said driver installation procedure. I went to Sager site and downloaded drivers from there . thanks for your help in this matter

If you plan to also use the computer in your office, like I am, check with your IT department to see if they'll give a license for XP Pro. AiG did this for me since I use the notebook for work.

IMO, as a power-user, XP pro without question. Not that I like microsoft of giving them money, but its far more efficient (faster... much, especially on boot times) manages multi-tasking better, less buggy, more features. Its worth 20$ more I guess.

With regards to the lifetime advantage of technical support when you buy it to resellers...

One advantage of buying retail, is you can use the retail version and transfer it to any computer (laptop or desktop).

While the OEM version (bought from the reseller), the drivers with the software is customized for the particular laptop you bought only...

I think, what would be better is ---a retail version (boxed)from the reseller. That way, you can use the software to any computer if you want but still receive the lifetime technical support for the laptop you bought from the reseller...

I am not aware of any reseller having this option...
That is probably the reason, why the option of having a laptop without a operating system bought with it... is popular...

Pharoke is right... If you are a student or a teacher, you are eligible for a discount in academic stores... (in store and online)

The least expensive online price I found with retail version of windows is with academicsuperstore.com.

They have a promo on windows OS before...

IN YOUR 3880 MANUAL ON pg 4-1 HAS THE DRIVE ORDER. ABOUT THE OS THE ONLY DIFF BETWEEN RETAIL AND OEM IS SUPPORT.THE PRODUCT KEY IS WHAT'S IMPORTANT. AS LONG AS IT IS AUTHENTIC.

I'd go for Pro...you may not need all of the features but the moment you do you'll be happy to have it. When I was in Taiwan there was an ISP firewall so I had to do file transfers through "remote connect" to a computer in Canada, which is only available through XP pro...you never know when you'll need those extra features...

Also alot of crap won't install on your computer if you don't have admin rights. So you can give yourself a non admin profile and protect yourself...the SONY DRM rootkit wouldn't install on your computer if you didn't have admin rights for instance...

again, only through pro.

Thanks RCI , I do not have the 3880 yet maybe tomorrow. I will break tradition and read the manual first . I work for University of California so this system will get windows XP Pro. Need to be on the network sometimes.

I agree with " pplepiew" Pro is worth the extra $$, unless your on a real tight budget then XP home is o/k

The Driver CD-ROM also has all the drivers in a list and tells you to "Install from the top first," or something like that.

I installed the wireless card drivers first to get the internet then I followed the order (per instructions) on the drivers CD.
Oh yeah. I also had to install the LAN drivers first in order to update XP before installing the rest of the drivers (as has been advised).

I wish I could elaborate on Home vs Pro, but I remember having Home with a new pc I bought a few years back and there were lots of "little things" that I found missing that turned out to be things that I was used to being able to do in 2000 Pro. Nothing big or major, just a few settings tweaks, better user management, compression/encryption capabilities, better network managment and the ability to see machines with other operating systems on the network. Also, there are several recovery tools and functions that when you do disaster recovery aren't there in Home. You can't turn off simple file sharing in Home Edition (pre SP2 so if they fixed that I don't know about it). I remember having issues with the default settings that you can't turn off because the control panel you needed to get to "does not exist in this version of XP, please contact your local retailer for more information." So I bought Pro and wrote off Home edition as a waste of time.
