Sager 5680 as a DAW

Thread Starter
Yesterday, my 5680 arrived! I was so freakin' excited that I think I peed a little (I changed afterwards. I promise. )

For those interested in the timing, I ordered by wire on the 1st, got the tracking number on the 5th and got the beast on the 11th.

Here are the options I got:
UXGA
3.0GHz
1024MB RAM
60GB 7200RPM HDD
DVD-RW
802.11g
Bluetooth
Dual Battery

Now to explain the title of this thread. I am a musician and bought the 5680 with the plan of making it into a DAW and to be a live instrument for stage performance of VSTi's, basically to act in place of a keyboard like Korg's Triton (which I also own but hope to sell if all goes well). So I would like to keep you interested folks up to date on how it goes. Hopefully this can help people who want to put together a similar setup. I will probably be slow to add things so please be patient.

Here is the rest of the setup I plan to use:
Edirol UA-1000 USB 2.0 Audio Interface
Edirol PCR-50 49-Key Midi Controller Keyboard
Western Digital 250GB Firewire/USB 2.0 Special Edition External HDD

Software I will be trying:
Sonar 3 Producer's Edition
Project5
Tracktion
various VST instruments

Sorry to those who don't agree with my choices of equipment or software but this is what I have. I'd rather talk about how things work in terms of the Sager instead of debating the merits of these items alone. There are already so many sites dedicated to that. What there isn't enough of are sites about laptop based music production and how to set up a good system, especially for PC. I can say however that after hours and hours of research, these were the choices that fit me and my needs so I'm very excited to get started.

Sounds interesting. I will keep a lookout for your future posts.

The DAW in your title caught my attention... I still don't know what a DAW is though.

But I think I understand the project you are undertaking. Good luck. Keep us posted!

Hey guys, I will teach you a really cool thing now, this little info will be really useful to you in the future. I didnt either know what DAW was, but I could figure out that it had to do with audio, so I went to a really ubercool site called google and typed in "audio" and "DAW". Guess what, it took me 2 seconds to find out what it was! Isnt that cool or what?

DAW = Digital Audio Workstation = usually describes a system designed to produce music (recording, editing, mixing etc.)

Yeah, searching these forums too will bring some information. I know myself and a bunch of other people have talked about using a Sager as a DAW before.
