Does anyone know how to get rid of tiny scratches on my month old XPS M170 pal rest, there small but im anally retentive and its bugging me looking at them! my other half was using a wireless optical mouse on it and its scratched it a few times, just a niggling annoyance to me so thought id see if anyone had ideas about removal. Hmm, these scratches are usually there to stay like on a mobile phone screen.

The only ways to get rid of them is to :
- Paint it, which you will eventually rub off again.
- Get the spare part from Dell and order it.

The last option is a bit more challenging (that is if you don't remove the cover when painting it) and costly. But it does provide you with a brand new palm rest.

I feel the same way! I love overall build feel of my XPS, but palmrest plastic quality is killinng me! I did order a replacement once, but since I take my laptop everywhere I go it's got scratches again. I am thinking about repainting it black. I think it will look so much better.

They sell for 20 or 30 bucks shipped typically on eBay. Search for 'palmrest'

err '9300 palmrest' is a better search

I've gotten 9200 parts from Ebay. They are usually the factory "seconds", and have scratches or defects. For example, I bought one keyboard bezel/palm rest piece, which was beautiful on the exterior, but the magnesium support casting that is melt-riveted into the underside had a crack in it. By no means useless, but just a warning in case you expect perfection.

I'll watch this thread to ask a question:
Does anyone know of a good source of very thin, durable "rubber-like" material that could be applied on the palmrest? Preferably black, and with adhesive already on the back.

Use wallpaper LOL.. no ... try some Self-Stick Laminating Sheets from Staples or BestBuy. Its clear not black but should work well.

Anyone ever see any self-stick, thin mouse pads that could be cut to the right shape? I use a small wireless notebook mouse on my 9300 palm rest and thought it would be nice to have some soft mouse pad material on the palm rests rather than just the plastic. Maybe I'll try using some leather with double stick tape...

Ehh. It's gotta be black for me to bother with it, and I really have something specific in mind. It would be as thin as that, but have a "grippy" rubber texture/feel to it.
Another one I'm looking for is a very thin suede-like texture. My brother has a Toshiba from the mid 90s that has that in grey, but it's on the bottom (instead of rubber feet).
