Gateway M675 17" upgradeable Video!

I found out today that the Gateway M675 uses a true AGP slot for their video card. This means it is upgradeable and also it is a true 8X AGP running dual channel ram.

AWESOME!

Well if it's upgradeable do you know how to get a new mobility graphics card when it comes out. Ask gateway.

I have a 675 and I see no way to upgrade the video. If this is true I would like get information, but I would check your source. I can tell you for a fact it does not use a agp slot for the video.

My source was a gateway tech source. He said it pops in the same way memory does.

Questions

1) Does HT technology affect the way certain games/programs run on a laptop? I have heard some people having problems running older software on this system.

2) Can someone put in English how having a 8X VC improves over a 4X? I understand that is the speed but I am looking for more in depth understanding in addition to the question I asked in an earlier post asking how much visual enhancement is given w/ a 128mb VC over a 64MB VC. Dell 8600 128MB VC is 4X and I dont think it is a true AGP.

3) How much does your 675 weigh? Does it match the published 8.8pds?

4) I understand and confirmed that the 675 does have a true full AGP VC; however, I could not get an answer if this means it can be upgraded later to an 256MB VC. If so I can see this happening in the near future since GW is putting 256 VC's in there 700 desktop series already.

5) Finally, I am really considering buying one of these pups soon. The deal is I am trying to decide when I should buy it. Will there be a bigger sale after New Years day? Contemplations. Your opinions are greatly appreciated however packaged! Thanks.

I am also on the heels of buying a 675xl, i had a chat with a tech the other day, but im not sure if he was looking for a sale. I appreciate if possible confirmation on it coming with 400mhz dual channel enabled out of the box. here is an excerpt :
rob: im curious about a few things on the 675 series
Raymon: OK
rob: wondering bus speed of memory, and if dual channel is enabled
Raymon: It is dual channel
Raymon: 400mhz
rob: how about the hard drives, the rotaional speeds on the x and xl
Raymon: 4200 and 5200
rob: thanks for your time

Their tech support is known to be... well lacking. I wanted to order one a month or so ago and people at support told me the hard drive was 7200rpm but turns out it's not. The tech support people are sometimes.. *misinformed* so I wouldn't hold my breath to believe the card is upgradeable until you post more sources.

5200 RPM drive

I have never heard of a 5200 RPM drive. Perhaps RAYMON meant to type in 5400 rpm.

I'm staying away from gateway since they don't offer any high resolution monitors for the two models I'd be interested in: the 675 and 505

I did notice that you can get the 675 with the 128MB 9600 if you select the Business m675e and customize it. Interesting that you can't find this option otherwise.

First off: I just got back from the Gateway House and the guy said even though it is an AGP VC there is no way to replace it. I obviously had this same question that needed answering. He said what you get is what you are stuck with in the VC arena. As for the sys memory, that is very easy to replace. That laptop really impressed me on how well it was built. At first I was die hard 8600, after seeing the 675 up close it changed my mind enough for me to have ordered one. As for the WXGA, there is not a manufacturer that has anything better on a 17" screen. Any questions about this laptop feel free to fire away!

so is it correct about it being dual channel @ 400 memory?
This memory is being offered on there system customization page:

512MB 400MHz DDR SDRAM

so I will say yes.
How much of an improvement is that over standard SDRAM
post #13 of 33
bossaic, thank you dearly for your input, i didnt know even after searching for about 10 days that you could customize. you just saved me 400 and change

I forgot to add: by using Small Business: If you go through gov you will not be able to get the 4X DVD Burner. By the way the CD-RW is 24X. L8R!

M675eb

Just ordered mine....If you order the PC3200 it will postpone the EDA, however, it is worth the wait. I would rather have Gateway add the memory in at least initially. I think they upgrade the BIOS since they due it.
Good Luck.
