adding extra thermal stuff necessary?

I just got two new dell desktops for work and wanted to swap the cpus. I put a dual core that was in an xps 400 in a 600. And vice versa. Seems dell had plenty of paste on both of them so i just made sure everything smushed back in place on both of the cpus when i was done. Was that good or bad?

they had lots of paste you say? Well aside from the fact im suprised they used thermal grease at all (over pad), I'd say thats bad. Usually you want as thin a layer as possible to avoid insulating the processor. If it runs though then idk.

BAD, BAD, BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are never suppose to reuse thermal paste, always use a new layer when you replace a CPU. especially with that new of a processor. They create a lot of heat.
