Sager 5660 vs Inspiron 8200 - Heat and Fan Noise?

Thread Starter
Does anyone know how the heat and fan noise on the Sager 5660 compares against the Inspiron 8200? The heat and fan noise, right now, are the two things that are making look at other laptops. Besides these two items, the 5660, in my opinion is the best laptop on the web.

Having read many reviews on the web (mostly about the Alienware 51m), the main thing each review mentions, consistantly, is the heat generated and the fan noise of the power supply. I plan on using the computer mostly for programming, and not for intensive game playing. Would this make a difference with the heat and fan issues?

One last question, is the heat and fan noise on the 5650 the same as the 5660?

Thanks!

I have used both the Inspiron 8200 and the Sager. The combination of the sound of the CPU fans and the noise of the fan in the transformer I would say it is 1.5 times louder than the Inspiron 8200 when it's fans are running.

It is not too bad really - However bear in mind that the Sager fan is running 85% of the time even just during general surfing.

The only heat comes out the left had side of the sager and can get fairly hot if you do any gaming for an extensive amount of time.

Would I buy the 8200 or the Sager - The Sager or perhaps the Toshiba S703

Dekka> You mentioned in another thread how the Inspiron's UXGA screen is better than the 5660's. Can you please give us a bit more detail as to why?

The Sager UXGA screen has something like 256k (256,000) colors on it. The Dell Ultrasharp has 16 million colors on it (16,000,000).

On with the fans - I have a 2.8ghz Sager, and the fans were on all of the time. If you are used to nice low sounding fans which are not on all the time (such as on Dell's), then expect to notice a difference.

Since the Sager uses a Northwood desktop CPU, it needs to be maintained at around 40 degrees C, whereas mobile CPUs can be ok at nearly 80 degrees C. Since the Sager is at 2.8ghz constantly (or whatever speed you have, 2ghz, or 2.4ghz), that means that it stays at that, and generates that much heat throughout. Since it needs to stay at around 40 degrees C, then it also means it has to stay cool = fans on ALOT.

If fans don't bother you, get the Sager, they are pretty quiet. However, if you are picky, go with the Inspiron 8200 with 2.2ghz mobile CPU. They are just as fast mhz for mhz, but the mobile has 400mhz bus, and fluctuates the speed.
