Sentia Problems...Time Wasted on hold: approx 5.5 hours 60+ days at depot

Hello everyone, I'm looking for some advice here...

I have sent my aw back twice now (I first called aw and reported the problems over 6 months ago, I then sent the computer back, and due to delays with katrina, it took 2 weeks to get there, and then it took aw 7 weeks to repair it, and a week to ship it back (well actually only 5 bizdays)...

Received computer, still didn't work, called aw, returned it to depot, reporting same problems as before....

Two weeks later receive my computer back again, same probems still present. matter of fact now the keyboard pops up randomly.

Some of the probmes I was having include:
- Consistant and constant interruptions in wifi connectivity on a completely cisco based network which supports both a and g. Have also tested at kinko's and such in an attempt to ensure that it wasn't the cisco network, which of course produced the same results, lack of constant connectivity.

By this i mean it is impossible to download a file, listen to internet streams, or even surf the web for more then a few minutes at a time, then the signal just drops and then the laptop says no networks found.

- Keyboard has a bad space bar, has had bad space bar for 6 months, reported it the first and second time i sent it in, how hard is it to verify that a spacebar has been fixed?

- Old Bios? Why would aw load an older bios when they reloaded my computer than it came with?

- Lose optical drive...When i first sent the computer in, the drive was completely lose, causing the computer to reset whenever it was touched. When it came back from aw, a screw had been inserted, but not tightened fully, so the drive was still lose, didn't function correctly, and caused the computer to reset at times.

- Bad Battery? I get under two hours of battery life and that's plugged into my 10/100 network and surfing the internet.

- Hot as hell...This laptop gets way to hot, the stickers on the bottom of it are melted...

Now let's talk about the worst part...every other laptop i purchase (for the ISP) are Toshibas, I went out on a limb here thinking alienware made a superior computer), what I have found is that I screwed myself by not going with Toshiba as alienware's support is a joke.

I hvae speant over five and a half hours on the phone with them...that's right...jsut under six hour of my time tryin to get this this issue resolved.

I still have the issues, and just got hung up on from someone with alienware after talking to them and being on hold for 1:15 because i had to run down 2 stories to the tech dept to find someone with a screwdriver small enough to remove the screws on the back of the machine so that I (yeah that's right, so that I) could start taking the thing apart to figure out what's wrong with it (it's been sent to the depot twice, and now they are going to try to tell ME how to diagnose the problems?)

Either way i'm not quite sure what I should do here...Overall i'm not too happy with the short battery life, the inability to turn off the eyes (very unprofessional for those of us who aren't gamers) I'm not saying that they messed up the style, but they did mess up by not allowing the eyes to be easily turned off. Style is one thing, obtrusive lights are another, i'm sure i'm not the only one who has tried to give ppt presentations with the sentia and a projector only to have everyone greatly distracted by the glow of the eyes.

-The USB ports are in horrible places.
-Their should be a bigger or larger batter option, or a batter that could be put in place of the optical drive.
-Why isn't bluetooth intgrated? That's absolutely ridicilous.
-The two plastic covers on either side of the screen mounts are very flimsy and often come lose.
- The balance is way off, the laptop always wants to fall backwards.

I should mention that I love the screen, the integration of that seperate linux based partition, the power save button next to the power button. It also has a great appearance, and has prompted many questions.

Truth be told, I reccommended alienware to quite a few people during the first few months I owned this sentia, but after getting used to it, and using it more often, i have found many peavs with it (if you will)

So now what should I do?
Call my CC Company and get a refund?
Ask Alienware for a refund?
Allow them to come out and do this onsite thing that they are talking about? And waste yet more time waiting for them, and even then, who says they will get it right the third time when they didn't the first two...

What does everyone/anyone think?

Thank you in advance and sorry for the long post, but i wanted to be thourough. I don't know what to do here, i NEED a laptop at work, but just can't seem to get this one to be reliable.

Sometimes bad machines do come out of the mothership, I like to think it's the exception, rather then the rule...
Were I you, I'd contact one of the AW people who frequent these boards, an' ask them to see your compter through another trip to the Depo, I would also pack a list of all the problems you've had with the computer in with the box, so they know exactly what to look for.
My Sentia has been nothing but good to me, an' I'm sure they'll do everything they can to get yours working for you again. If you absolutely need one for work, I'd buy a cheap-o lappy to last you through the time your sentia is at the depo, but again, that's just me.

I am really sorry to hear about the unfortunate issues regarding your Sentia. Please PM me you account information and I will see what I can do to resolve this to your satisfaction.

Just wanted to post here and let anyone/everyone who's listening know that Steve has stepped upto the plate to take care of everything that was lacking before.

Alienware is a great company and their support, while sometimes untimely, has the potential to be top notch.

I'll post the exact resolution once I have a chance to get back to steve (that's right, for the first time I'm the one who's holding up the process).

I'm glad you were able to get your support issue resolved, but I worry that it takes an intervention in some of these cases to get it resolved.

I'm interested in these issues you mentioned since I'm considering a Sentia as well.
- Is it really that hot?

- I give powerpoints to other physicians a lot, if you can't turn the eyes off, that might lose some credibility points for me. Also, I surf in bed while my wife's asleep, so she might not appreciate the eyes glaring at her either.

- I was disappointed about the lack of BT integration as well. Sure is nicer to have it integrated than having a dongle hanging out. I heard there were a couple of flush mount cards, but that just occupies my slot.

Sounds like you've ordered another Sentia, what about these issues you raised?

Hello there thanks for reading over the post...

The Heat...

Heat is an issue I have found with almost every laptop. It's just in their nature. It reduces battery life and decreases the life expectancy of most other parts as well. The sentia I previously had seemed to get even hotter than most laptops I've owned, making it stand out to me. I figured alienware would better deal with the heat, not make it more noticeable.

The Eyes....
I have read that there is a way to disable the eyes, it is supposed to be in the bios (I beleive). When my sentia origionally shipped to me there was a bios uption but then it went away.

There are also several people who have cut the wire lead to them or built some sunglasses for them to preventhe aforementioned problems.

Bluetooth...

This is absolutely obsurd. External bluetooth adapters require more power, are often unsightly, and like you mentioned, occupy one of the three valueable USB ports. Integration could and would not of been that expensive, but was left out for some unknown reason.

It should be there. I picked up a bluetooth adapter for $4 that fits in the spot perfectly, but I miss the extra usb port and feel that battery life is hurt somewhat by the addition.

Now as for getting a new sentia...as this is a warrenty deal I only had a choice of alienwares and none of their other laptops would work for what I do (I need thin, light, and long battery life).

As for steve having to step in like he did in order to actually get something done, that's a problem found with many companies, and while I found alienware easy to deal with the first 2 times I dealt with them, thereafter was just a pain.

I will say however that there are very few other companies who watch forums as closely and make it their objective to be helpful and resourceful as steve has been.

Long story short, i'd wait for the new sentia models to come out (they may already be out, mine was supposed to ship the second), and you'll probably have a unit built with such quality that it will not have to be warrenty repaired.

Feel free to email me if you have any other questions as I am rarely around this forum.

Will you do me a favor when you get your new Sentia and tell us how it compares (especially heat and battery-wise) to your old Sentia?

And, of course, we hope this one will be free from problems!

PS- You don't have email enabled in your profile, I'll send you a private message.

Thanks,
Brent
