Wow Laptop(Dell XPS M140?)

Thread Starter
Im looking for a laptop that can play World of Warcraft decently, and for a decent price. Im looking at $1,500 as the maximum i could spend(because im looking to buy this around x-mas, or before). The other day i saw this:

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/prod...=19&l=en&s=dhs

And this really caught my attention, mainly because the cheapest model is only $1,000 and because it was an XPS, which ive heard great things about, and it looks like a decent size. Would this be capable of playing games such as World of Warcraft well? Im a gamer, but i would use my main rig to play FPS and stuff, im just looking for a laptop to play a couple MMOs and do some surfing on, so its not like i need a hardcore 10LBS desktop replacement that can do fantastic gaming.

Would this laptop suit my needs? Should i go with the $1,000 version, or would it be worth waiting a while and getting the $1,367 version or the $1,533, though that would be really pushing it for me, but if it meant lasting longer, and continuing to play games for a lot longer, i could do it.

Are there any coupons or specials that could make this even cheaper?

Please tell me what you think.

THANKS

It has an integrated graphics card. Dont think it'll get you very far with games. (might be able to play WoW at low settings)

The fact that its named an XPS doesn't really mean anything. Even if you don't plan on doing a lot of gaming, any laptop with dedicated graphics will last a lot longer than with integrated.

What extra features would you get for the extra money? As of now, the only graphics option for the M140 is integrated.

you can get an asus z71v for 1367 and it has a much much better gfx card.

Does anyone have a sugestion for a different laptop around $1,000?

Do you want no bigger than a 14" screen? You'll have a lot more options for non-integrated graphics if you buy a 15.4".

15.4 would be fine, but i don't want a 17" computer, i want it more compact.

EDIT: i was looking up the asus z71v, and isn't that a barebone? I thought that building a laptop, though i think it would be fun, is not very cheap.

Nevermind, i found it. It looks pretty good. I found it at ibuypower.com and it looks great, plus it has a 6600.

The 6000 is very nice, and will play WoW pretty good. You should be able to get it with the 128 mb x300 card for under $1000 if you use coupons. I agree, 17" is too big - 15.4 is the perfect mix of having a fairly large screen, but still having some portability.

are you talking about the asus z71v? Where would you recomend buying one? and what coupons are you refering to?
I'm talking about the Dell 6000 - that's what I have. I figured you might want to go with a Dell since that's what you were looking at originally.

As for coupons, you can find coupons Dell has by looking in the dell coupon thread in these forums (that thread is in the Dell General section).

Is the graphics card good enough on the 6000? I don't know much about ATI graphics cards. How good is it?
It's a low-end graphics card, but you can still play most new games with it (on low settings). It won't have a problem with playing World of Warcraft.

The Asus you mentioned has a better video card, but is also a lot more expensive.

You might even want to consider the HP DV4000 or Compaq V4000T, which have the ATI x700 as available upgrade options. Moreover, it'll be easily less than $1.5k.

[Edit] A quick configuration of the Compaq V4000T get's

for $1309.00 with free shipping. Throw in another 1gb stick of RAM from Newegg for an additional $100 puts the grand total at $1.4. But you can reduce the costs by downgrading the CPU because a 2.0Ghz P-M is overkill for WoW.

Just throwing the option out there. It's just my personal opinion based on my experiences with this brand.

This Acer would also fit the requirements easily as well for $1.1k http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834115196

Best of all, these laptops only weigh around 6 lbs.

IF your looking at playing WOW, why are you looking at a laptop with integrated graphics?? You wont get very far at all with integrated and gaming. Id start with the INspiron 6000, at least you can get a dedicated graphics card and around the price you are looking at.

I paid 1477 with a 30 percent off coupon and got the Inspiron 9300 with teh 6800 nvidia go card with 256 megs of memory. There's currently a 30 percent coupon out for inspirons, you could probably get the 9300 for that price, see my sig for my configuration.
Based on what you have posted, I dont think anything less than the 9300 will suit your gaming needs now and in the future.
Dont let that XPS moniker on the m140 fool you, its NO GAMING MACHINE

lmk29o, don't listen to Cutters. He does nothing on these forums except try to convince people to go with the 9300 instead of the 6000. Don't get me wrong, the 9300 is a great computer, but is overkill if you're don't need to do tons of gaming on it.

Cutters, here's what lmk29o said:

He needs some degree of portability, which was why he was originally looking at the 14" M140. He certainly doesn't want a huge 17" laptop to lug around. He also doesn't need great gaming performance because he said he uses his "main rig" (I assume a desktop) for games.

I'd go with a used xps they go around 1500-2000ish on here

17 inch too big??? thats what all people say who DONT HAVE ONE, the 9300 is only half an inch deeper and an inch wider than the 6000 yet nearly the same price and you get a whole lot more performance out of the 9300 with its 6800 card, especially someone looking to do gaming.
There will never be an upgrade card for the 6000 and I strongly urge gamers not to consider this system as it offers no future proofness, extended life where gaming is concerned.
The 9300 is very portable, I carry mine to work all of the time, alot of people have that misconception about it until they actually own one, myself included.

it is huge to me, but thats fine!

Even the 6000 is a pretty big laptop - most people consider 14" average. So there isn't much difference going from 14 to 15.4, or from 15.4 to 17, but there's definitely a considerable difference going from 14 to 17.
