Mac user since 1985 chimes in ...Leocal and Boathouse, I too am soon to be a switcher ... to a Sager 5660.
I've been using exclusively using Apple products since the late 1970s and Macs since 1985. I earn my money as a senior print and interactive designer (with more than 12 years experience), and some monies on the side through fine art (both traditional media and digital). I use all the standard programs ... Indesign, Quark, Illustrator, Photoshop, Painter, BBEDIT, and the lot. And I am soon going to switch platforms to PC ... and a Sager 5660 notebook specifically. Why? Price versus performance mainly.
I've been researching the move to a laptop for a few months now. Here in Canada a decently equipped G4 TiBook with 15" monitor and the 64MB ATI 9000 card costs $4500 before tax ... that's almost $5200 with tax! That's the well equipped 15" TiBook ... 15.2-inch TFT Display, 1280x854 resolution, 1GHz, 512MB SDRAM, 60GB Ultra ATA/66, SuperDrive, ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 64MB DDR video.
Admittedly the SuperDrive is a nice feature, the stability of 10.2.3 rocks (my main work machine is almost 80 days straight no crashes), but $5200?! Come on. I've got update prices on most of my heavily used software and for some thing like BBESDIT there's always HTML Edit (freeware for the PC) that'll do.
When I order my new Sager 5660 and ship it to our company's Niagara Falls, NY office, it'll set me back about CDN$2600. One half what a decent TiBook costs. It's a no-brainer.
As soon as I can selll one of my higher-end G4 desktops Sager's got my business. The independant reviews rock, the machine kicks butt, and my five year old son can finally play Trainz. Daddy gets to play Praetorians and create dungeons in Neverwinter Nights, but that's another story :-)
Yup, a switcher, but not one you'll see on the Apple site. Maybe I can advertise for someone and score a deal on a Sager? ;-)
Just my $0.02.
