Wireless Assist needed...

So, I've got cable internet. Love it really. But, as of a few months ago dad was paying AOheLL $20/mo for dial up. So I pipe up and say " We can do a wireless network here and save you some $"

And so began my foray into the world of wireless networking.

The players:
Alienware P3 450 full tower geforce4 mmx 768ram so slow i forget the name.

Alienware P4 2.53 full tower geforce ti4600 768 damn rdram sb live!

Dell d6000 1.6 P-M x300 128 40gb5400rpm 512 1 sodimm.

The parts:

So, I figured the linksys junk would just hook up np but I was wrong. No amount of pushing the button on the router would get my other systems online. Sure, they recognized them, but I got "cannot associate with access point" messages all day when I tried to encrypt.

The answer(for now) I'm running an unsecured network and all seems fine. However, I don't like this.

So, I'm asking a question in 3 parts:

1) I live in a very rural area. I've walked around my property with the laptop and I lose signal way before I come even close to my neighboors. Am I safe relatively speaking or not?

2) What am I missing with linksys? That SSID isn't working at all for me.

3) Finally, and this references question #1, what is the range that someone can intercept or otherwise messup my unsecured network?

Peace out!

On the router. You need 1.) A SSID name 2.) A Password for Admin and WPA/WEP 3.) You need to broadcast the SSID and Radio 4.) Turn off anything that enhances the signal, like Super G, use only B/G 5.) Change to Channel 1 or 11

On the computers. You need. 1.) See the SSID 2.) Type in the Password 3.) Set that SSID as your preferred SSID 4.) Make sure all of your WLAN cards in the computers have the latest drivers 5.) Go into network connections in control panel and enable your WLAN card 6.) Make sure your WLAN card is enabled in bios and device manager.

1) If you can't see the signal, you can't intercept it.
3) That said, If someone really wanted to find it, they could use a high gain antenna, like a parabolic dish or a high gain yagi. But they'd have to know it was there to find.

Just use Mac address filtering and do not broadcast your SSID.

and also limit the number of available DHCP licenses to the number of pcs on your network.
