Picture editing software

Hi there, have just downloaded a Gorillaz wallpaper for my laptop and unfortunately it comes with some crappy writing on it . Just wondering if anyone can recommend a good, free and relatively easy-to-use pic. editing program to sort this out?

Also want to put a picture that i have onmy laptop as my user picture and need the same program to be able to scale it down - is this possible? What is the diff. between a user pic. and an avatar?

Photoshop all the way. If you want i could try editing the text out for you.

Avatar is showen under your name user pic is showen if you click there name.

I do, too...but it's now Corel's Paint Shop Pro and it's not free.

The GIMP is great...free, too.

Also, some of my friends have highly praised Paint.net
