I am can get an Apple from work and I can get any Apple laptop I want. I can get an iBook or Powerbook, but money is not an issue. I choose a PowerBook.
So now the question is do I get a 12 or 15 inch version? The 17 inch is too big for me.
I realize that the size is a personal question that only I can answer, but I wanted to hear your opinions on the other specs.
I have been reading these forums and I have a somewhat understanding. Please correct me or add
-I realize that the Apple laptops may not be gaming machines. Does the ATI mobility 9700 offer a great improvement in that regard? Does the 9700 offer that much more DVD stability?
-I understand the 15inch has newer technology (like the DDR2 4200 and more max memory). Is it that important for overall performance?
-The 15 incher also has the optional 7200 RPM drive. I have seen some of the benchies for WinXP and 4200, 5400, 7200RPM and the 7200RPM is definately faster. I suppose it would be important if everything else meshed well. What do you think?
-Do the sum of these parts make the 15 inch Powerbook a much better performer? If you can put a relative increase in overall performance, what would it be (i.e. it is 1.1x or 2 times)?
I would use the computer for simple stuff, like surfing the web, watching a DVD, writing papers, simple (occasional and really basic) video editing, listening to music. Nothing too taxing.
However, if the 15 incher does offer a significant leg up from th 12inch for games . . . I would be tempted to play games on it, in the down time. Games like WoW or Civ4, no FPS or games like Black and White 2.
A little more about myself, I also have a Dell 700m which most likely will be replaced with the Apple. I also have a killer XP based gaming desktop, so gaming on the go is not that important, and I am looking forward to getting the Xbox 360. I believe I have my gaming solved, but gaming on the go . . . . I dunno, never done it.
Even more, if you believe that something else is around the corner, please let me know. I need to spend this money or it disappears. I have about 4 months to do it. I know the Mactels are coming, but in that time frame I do not believe I can use this money for them.
Edit: If everything being equal, you guys think the 12 inch iBook is better suited for me then I can get that and spend the money elsewhere. It is "my money" but I can not get it as a check. It is my expense account.
Guys, I appreciate your opinions.
