Compter doesnt boot

My friends sony vaio does not start up. When you press the power button, it does nothing. One out of 20 times it starts up, shows a SONY Screen, and then shuts down. Any suggestions that may be causing this please post here. It is not the battery, because I have already checked that.

I tried it without the battery, with AC power only, and vice versa, and still no boot up.

Take out the RAM sticks and re-seat them. If that fails get a copy of Norton System works and drop in in the CD. Hopefully the boot order is still CD first and HD second. Run the antivirus tools from the Norton CD. If still a NO GO either the HD is hosed or the CPU is hosed. I hope I'm wrong.

It could be the power supply or switch that has gone bad. Usually you at least get a error code from the bios if it was not a power supply issue. I have computer that did the same thing. Hopefully your friend still has a warranty, because the switch is usually a transistor built into the motherboard. I suggest finding a simular laptop and use it to test your memory and hard drive. If all else fails and sony won't cover you, go to ebay and look for that model being parted out, sometimes you can find a replacement that will have better features and it wont suck so bad. good luck
