Three problems with my 5720

With great joy, I received my 5720 today. However, I have already discovered three problems—strangely low 3DMark05 scores (around 3300), a broken lid latch/lock, and worst of all the computer completely shuts itself down.

The low 3DMark05 score is being discussed here.

The left lid latch feels like it has no spring inside of it. It can be switched into either locked or unlocked and it never springs back. It even feels flemsy or broken on the inside.

But the worst problem is my computer powering itself completely off—while I'm working and while full battery power and even plugged in! This always seems to occur after I've brought the computer back from standby. It's happened four times today:
  • After I'd installed all updates and drivers, I tilted the lid down to examine the back plugs. This put the computer in standby mode. Fewer than twenty seconds after I moved the lid back into open position, the computer lost power as if I pulled the battery and the plug, but both were in, and the battery was fully charged.
  • Again, I had the computer plugged in and the battery was fully charged. I closed it to transport it and a couple minutes after reopening and it resuming from standby, the PC lost power.
  • The third time was after I put the computer in standby to drive home. Before leaving the parking lot, I pulled the computer out and decided to let some software install while I was driving. While Splinter Cell 3 was installing, the computer lost all power even though it still held 95% battery charge.
  • After booting again, I closed the computer's lid and didn't reopen until I got home. After setting up the computer and waking it up, I saw that it still had about 30% battery life, so I began working on the battery power. But just a minute after waking the computer, it lost all power.

In each of the above cases, this was a total loss of power, not just a standby, sleep, or hibernate process.

While my 3DMark05 scores are probably software-related, the lid latch/lock is quite significant for the computer's safety, and the power-loss issue is totally unacceptable.

Does anyone have any ideas?

well, im dont know how to fix the other 2 problems, but the latch problem itself would make me send it back to be fixed or get a new unit.

Don't you have 10 days to report the unit as DOA? I'd definitely go that route...

are you sure thats not just how the latch is supposed to be? i mean its like that on my 3790 and it makes it so you can open it with one hand, without having to assume an awkward position of both hands on both latches. but if it feels flimsy i would inquire about it, as mine does not feel flimsly, just slids into latched unlatched smoothly.

Does the 3790 have two latches? Note that I said the left latch. The right latch works great with a spring behind it, a sturdy feel, and it stays locked thanks to the spring. The left latch goes in either position, but the slightest touch can lock or unlock it.

And here's something new on the power-loss problem. It only happens when a disc is in the drive. Figure that one out!

Well DJ would have to say contact the seller (PCT?) or Sager and do an RMA intransit swap. That is just horrible.

Well, maybe not just having a disc in the drive. Here are two instances for comparison (happened in the last ten minutes!):

1. I closed the lid, reopened, and the computer lost power before I could finish typing in my password. A disc was in the drive.
2. Closed and reopened the lid, began trying to reinstall the chipset drivers from the disc. Halfway into the installation, the computer loses power.

But I tried this again with a disc in the drive and the computer is still up. I'm now browsing the computer PDF manual on the disc. We'll see what happens now.

I'm waiting for a call back from ... well, I'm not quite sure who I called. I dialed the "PCT Support" number from PCTorque.com, but they asked me where I bought the computer. The "Sager Support" number just rings. Where are the hours anyway?

NM that "what happens now." The PC just lost power when I double-clicked the disc drive from My Computer.

This is bad. This is real bad. I wonder if I can just swap HDs when I receive the replacement PC.

yeah it has two latches and from the pictures i see of it, it looks about the same.

I have to say, seeing how bad this power loss issue is it would be a good idea to send it back, no point dealing with it if its a "lemon" (i guess its better something like this happens the first day you get it then the day after the warrenty expires)

Don't let this worry you. Issues like this will arise with a rare random computer (especially Toshibas—at least in my history with them). The 5720, other than my three problems, is an awesome computer.

...

Tech support called me back while I was writing this reply. The gentleman said that the latches are both supposed to be spring loaded, and that the power-loss issue is worthy of replacement. He gave me Sager's number to call in the morning for a replacement.

MAN! And just when I was about to really enjoy this computer! I sure hope that I get the replacement before Thanksgiving!

My 5720 also has no spring in the left latch. However, I thought this was normal. The left latch has little icons over it indicating that it is a lock. If it's supposed to be spring loaded like the right latch, what's the point of the icons? How would it be a lock?

Could anyone else with a 5720 please reply and say if their left latch is spring loaded. I'd like to know if mine is busted.

no spring for my 5720 , its normal for lock and unlock also my brother 5720 same thing

OH! I thought that the lock icons were on both latches. Okay. My bad there. But the power issue is still a problem.

Did PCTorque have that option?
you are not dealing with pctorque.
i was suprised when i call luke.
i told to luke whats wrong with my 5720 and luke said that go to sagernotebook.com and request a service.
i thought they are not related. i mean pctorque has own service like that.
well....i guess you can check on sager site about shipping thing.

you can asked them have a new 5720 first. but you need money to let them hold on your card. i didnt want them hold my money so i sent mine first.
as soon as tech got mine , he said that he will send new one at that day.

brutality

I feel your pain DJ and offer my condolences...I cant imagine how frustraing this must be...
If I had to guess I would say your GFX card is deffective, that score is about half of what you should be getting out of the box, as for the random shutdowns, I have no clue ....
I hope your replacement is all its supposed to be, keep us informed on your customer service experience, I could have easily been in your shoes if the 5720 would have been released a few weeks earlier, I decided to go for the m170, and I think it was a good choice as this nb has been awesome from day one~I also liked the appearence of the m170 slighty more then the 5720, but have a feeling the Sager looks better in person.

Hmm. I just demonstrated this problem to coworkers and the computer lost power without a disc in the drive! That throws out that theory.

Can you Sager 5720 owners test this? Put the computer into standby, wake it back up, and then start using it (especially something with a disc). Does it lose power on you?
I pull mine out of standby every morning without problems. It sounds serious IMO. And as far as replacement shipping goes, check your service agreement with whomever you bought it from as good vendors offer to expedite shipping to 2 or 3 day if you buy their extended warranty plans.
