What did I do different? I opened up my Sager and pulled that tape off. But it removed some of the heat transfer pad with it. So Sager is replacing it (they called me after Luke told them about my problems).
The CPU did slow down to 1.5 GHz or slower, but I'm guessing the power failure was due to the CPU overheating after a standby faster than it could speedstep and thus the power failure.
