Only if you are planning on overclocking will you need a heatsink different than the stock one that comes in the retail box w/ the CPU. That particular CPU runs very cool already, and many people overclock it w/ the stock heatsink/fan combo w/o any problems at all.

Ahhh your rig is fairly similar to mine.

Dell FPW2005 20.1" widesreen LCD

Thermaltake tsunami dream case

Asus A8N SLI Deluxe motherboard

3000+ Venice clocked at 2.6 on stock heatsink and fan

2gigs of OCZ PC3200 performance series ram

10,000 rpm western digital 74GB hard drive (Raptor)

If you play games alot you are going to want to get yourself a nice sound card. I highly recommend the X-Fi extreme music sound card. It is about $130 and sounds simply amazing. Onboard sound sucks @$$ for games and mp3's.

Pick up an Audigy 2 value for $60 then. It is still 100X better than onboard audio. Some people dont realize that onboard audio will kill your frame rates in games. It doesnt do the sound processing but instead offloads it to the CPU which in turn kills FPS in games.

There is no need to buy an additional soundcard with this motherboard... just be sure u plug in the audio module that comes with this motherboard it has everything u need to play games and browse the web... it has surround sound , digital in and out and everything else u need...dont waste your money on an extra soundcard.

Onboard audio sucks. Just because it works doesn't mean you won't need a new audio card. Plus discrete sound cards offer less internal noise than onboard audio. With creative, most of the audio processing is done by the sound card, which will definitely help you framerate in games. In fact, onboard audio can cause as much as a 10-20% hit to your frame rate.

I'm planning on buying that for my headphones... Are those good? Would I still need a sound card? I heard those have a great sound card built in too.. Lol...

If you use those then no you dont need a sound card. They work pretty good.

USB based sound cards (or headphones) have much higher CPU usage than dedicated sound cards. When you play heavy CPU based games you'll get popping/hissing intermittently as the CPU will be too overloaded. This won't happen with every game, but high CPU stress games like HaloPC or potentialy FEAR. I'd just get an Audigy 2ZS or an X-Fi and be done with it.

Do you think with a machine that billy that you would see much of a performance increase with newer games if you upped the ram to 2 gigs instead of 1 gig? I actually just ordered through newegg a very similar machine, and also decided to go with 1 gig of memory. I'm debating if I should have upped it to 2 gigs instead?
