Gateway laptop foggy screen

Thread Starter
Trying to help my dad with his gateway laptop. Screen starts to develop a fog to it and will at times become 100% foggy so that nothing can be seen. Other times, it will start to fog, then if I tap the corner, it stops and goes away. I plugged another monitor into the back of the lap top and it works fine while the laptop is foggy.

This problem only occurs occasionally, most of the time, the computer works well. The only other problem is that the laptop battery is nearly dead. It will work for about five minutes.

I imagine that it is the screen causing the problem. If so, it doesn't sound like it is worth fixing. Any thoughts or ideas. The computer has had moderate use for about 2-1/2 to three years.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Get a new laptop. A cheap one will be worth the money. With a 700$ laptop, you will run circles around that pos. I'll bet it is the integrated graphics (scoff) that you have in that gateway. Is it a solo? I had one and it crashed in a week. It had an ATI FireGL graphics solution that couldn't adequately play DVDs and I think all problems with screen trouble start with the graphics, unless the LCD was poorly made. My suggestion thought, get a new laptop from Ebay or a reseller somewhere. It sounds like that laptop had its beginning, middle, and now you have to give it an end.

The right side of the screen on my 6809 is now half fogged. I am still typing on the rig, but there is something wrong with the connection between the screen and the laptop. This is about the 4th time this has happened. The other times I was able to tap the side of the laptop and it fixed the problem. I suppose I am going to have to send the rig in for repair. I have a 3 year warranty. Also, my DVD drive will not burn DVD's anymore. So I can have that fixed too. Maybe they will just replace the rig instead of fixing it! But I can't send it in until I get my "spare" laptop back from a friend. I need something to work with while this rig is MIA. This may be a dumb question, but is it possible to take the hard drive from this 6809 and put it in an HP ZE model laptop?? It would be nice to have all of my saved work available to use when this rig is being fixed.

as far as the harddrive goes, yes. but i dont think they will work on the machine with out the orginal harddrive installed. you can however use your USB 2.0 and transfer your stuff to an external hard drive, or use a network and send all your files that way. if worse comes to worse, you could set up an adhoc network (wifi) and beam em. it'll take the longest and requires two computers with Wi-Fi but hey it'll get the job done.

I have a solo 5350 that was fogging up on me, as well...I took the LCD panel out, and made sure all the connectors were firmly seated. No luck...put the lid back together, hooked it to an external monitor, got important data, zero-ed out the drive, and booted to a DOS prompt to fdisk and reformat. During reformat, the screen came back. And it stayed back all morning today. For fun, I reloaded the OS and drivers, and am going to see if it keeps working. What the hell, right?
