The 5680/8890 Gentoo Thread - Page 6

ACPI seems to be working fine for me. I have received 4 of these messages in the last 36 hours:

ACPI breakpoint: Executed AML Breakpoint opcode

SMP works fine. I have also been able to get APIC to work, but only when SMP is not selected. (at least I think that's how it works; took a day and a half off and I have the worst short term memory)

Despite these few wonderful things, I can not Xfree to load up. I keep getting these errors.

**Edit: added 20042402, 0915hrs -

I get that error with opengl-update ati and opengl-update xfree. Also, if I attempt to run glxgears it gives me the following error:

Error: couldn't open display (null)

So, what did I muck up this time? Any help would be grateful.

Thanks,
Paul

did you run fglrxconfig to set up your XF86config-4 file?

yeah, I set that up the best I could. I am unsure of the Vsync and Hsync parameters though. Are there any other particulars I should know for this setup? Also, do I have to check a certain kernel setting or module to load up for the monitor?

It looks like DRI isn't loaded. How do I do that? I tried emerge DRI, but that didn't work. Is DRI something embedded in the kernel, or do I have to load a module?

Also, I checked the /lib/modules/2.6.3-gentoo/kernel/drivers/char directory but no ati drivers; only lp.ko whatever that is.

I'm really kind of stuck. Am I too feeble-minded to figure this out, or just uneducated in the ways of linux?

Help would be great; thanks again,
Paul

Oh boy, tons and tons of reading... I haven't read this much since college.

I think I have the ATI drivers setup properly, but I keep getting the following error when I try to load glxgears or glxinfo:

Error: couldn't open display (null)

I recompiled the kernel with DRM and now my log file reports different errors now:

I'm really starting to get annoyed with this!

I did come across this link searching for answers on google:

I will try this out next...

Well, decided to go with the fglrx 3.2.8 drivers and I can start X but now I only get a black screen with the X mouse... The mouse moves and all, but the HD isn't crunching or anything... hmmmm, what now?

**Edit - Both my USB wireless mouse and the touchpad are working, but I can't even ctrl-alt-del.... keyboard seems to be working; caps and num light up. Just a black screen with the X pointer. Any ideas now?

**Edit #2 - Sidenote; added USB support for my ever-so-useful usbkey.

Also, three questions on booting....

* Services 'autoconfig' and 'local' have circular
* dependency of type 'iafter'; continuing...

and

/sbin/rc: line 73: hwsetup: command not found

and lastly

* WARNING: "hotplug" has already been started.

Where are these files located? I have looked but my brain is having trouble keeing up. Maybe it's time for another break...

I'm running KDE - ACPI no work.

As for PseudosaneX - I think I had the same problems as you did. Did you make sure to disable DRI/DRM in the kernel? Make sure sure it is completely disable (not even a module) in the kernel (I think it is in Character Devices). If you want the ATI-Drivers, you don't want DRI.

Thanks rk_cr! compile is done; copying and rebooting!

New kernel without DRM in kernel or in module.... black screen, both mice moving, same as before with DRM.

X loads into it's on window system right? or do I need to install something else? I dont' have KDE or Gnome installed. Am I supposed to have one of those installed?

/shrug

I'm just a newbie :P

Um no. Running the command X simply creates an X session upon which various programs can display - think of X as the communications layer between the screen and applications. Running startx runs X AND the applications including the window manager. In theory you could run the X command and then from a virtual terminal start the window manager of choice.

EDIT: Think of X as the server side of the equation.
EDIT2: It was my understanding that the latest linux drivers were 3.2.7.
Bratag -- I think I understand the whole X thing... so I need to install Gnome now to get a desktop like environment? I can run Netscape/Opera from X or that has to be run from Gnome? I keep trying to emerge opera 7.50, but it wants to emerge 6.12, how do I get around this?

ATI-Drivers: 3.2.7 may have been the latest, but I just got 3.2.8 :P

**Edit - Search for fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.8.i586.rpm

Thanks for the info,
Paul

Yes gnome or KDE or windowmaker or fvwm or enlightenment etc etc etc. Failign that you could just keep switching to virtual terminals and run stuff like opera etc from there to the X session - I do not recommend this .

Where did you get the 3.2.8 from can I ask and can I get a copy. I have noticed a lot of ghosting with the 3.2.7

What is your personal pref on the windows environment? I'm pretty new at this, but i'm hacking away at it, pardon my terminology.

Thread Starter
If you want a more familiar environment, start with KDE or Gnome - I use KDE. People say it is bloated but I do not consider booting into a fully functional GUI with all bells and whistles and only using 95MB of RAM "bloated". Once you feel like going minimalistic (which I dont feel like doing yet) try things like Enlightment or Fluxbox.

I am a fan of Windowmaker. Its a very small footprint anf has a very easily configurable interface and comes with a nice tool to do menus etc.
My mistake the latest drivers from ATI are 3.7.0
post #119 of 170
Familiar is good, but Gnome takes a gazillion emerges and I am still using the ol' usbkey to transfer my files from this computer to the lappy... If I could get a better idea of the list of exact files i'd burn a CD. That'd work faster, but i'd have to guess at exactly which files.

Looking for something with very few packages, file size isn't all that big of a deal, just don't want a lot of little 2-300k files I have to move the key from one computer to the other every 5 seconds....

If Windowmaker is like this great. I am looking for something to game with a little bit as well. What is stable for that. I have heard of WineX; how is that?

Thanks for the info and advice guys,
Paul

How much better are 3.7.0 ? The screen freezes when I logout of X without DRM and with DRM the screen doesn't refresh properly and leaves text with lines all over the screen. I can barely see the command line to type reboot, but that is just it; I have to reboot.

Any ideas on that?
