Any ideas on that?
The 3.7 dirvers are stable but as I said the 2d accel sucks - thats just the ATI drivers in general. 3d perf is good. For gaming I use wineX for some games - things like WarcraftIII and BF1942 play just fine. Better still is to look for native games like NWN and UT2003/4 and RTCW ET. Check out also www.happypenguin.org a very good site for linux gaming. Windowmaker is a pretty small package and has only a few small reqs.

This is only 5 emerges as opposed to Gnome's 112!!!

Thanks, I'll check it out now...

As far as the 3.7's, I'll see how the 3.2.8s hold up for now. I've been burnin' the candle for awhile , gonna head for dreamland soon.

Bah you young fella's no stamina - go hard or go home . If you have any issues etc then just let me know. Also check out www.dockapps.org it is a great source for lots of little apps that do things like monitor temp, email, weather etc etc. It also happens that I wrote 3 or 4 of them which seem pretty popular WMxmms is in fact going to be incorporated in the next debian release.

Gratz on that. I will be sure to download a few once I get WM up and running; compiling now. I don't know that I'll get around to the games until the weekend though. Guard duty is a killer on my personal time

Thanks again for the help!

Stupid Life - always getting in the way of important things like games. Seriously though check out RTCW ET and the UT2004 demo - both are free and both are damn good fun. Both also play at 1600x1200 everything on without a hitch.

Well, unsuccessful with WM for tonight - blah. Having a killer time with the video. Says I am using a FireGL; makin' me mad.

Gotta get some sleep, wake up and do it all over again.

later d00d,
Paul

ps - i'll be sure to check out the gamez t00

Hey, Paul. Just thought of suggesting spending some time to figure out the Internet connection problem because this ain't Windows and you will have to update something virtually every day - doing that with the USB key all the time will drive you absolutely nuts.... Just a thought .

wassssaaaap Mikhail,

I'd really like to get it working, but I have less than two months to go here and things will really start to pick up as we break camp. Plus, the networking guys are real anal about security and usage. When I first got here we could use AIM, YM, MSN, and of course the army internet chat (kind of like AIM express). Now they cut those out, with the exception of AKO IM (armychat), and blocked all the ports except 8080. Kind of sucks because the rotation before us used webcams; bastages! I suppose if I didn't have ANY internet at all then I'd try to work something out.

This is a blessing in all honesty. It's been awhile since I communicated with anyone from the outside world, besides my friends and family of course. So, this makes me happy enough!

YiPpEe! WM works! Now just gotta try opera and see if the proxy settings work there. cross your fingers!!

**edit - speaking of Opera, how do I get Portage to install the latest version? it keeps asking for the 6.12 version, but i'd like to install the latest; 7.50

**edit2 - Opera 6.12 works for sites that don't require authentication, suchas yahoo, MSN, etc. I can't access sites suchas Google, Talkenotebooks, and others that the server requires authenticaion. Does Opera 7.5 have this feature?

The latest stable x86 version of Opera in the Portage is 7.23, while 7.5 is only an alpha right now. 6.12 is two Portage releases below. The problem is that without an Internet connection, you can't 'emerge sync' - cant update your portage tree to show the up-to-date collection of available packages. Man, this is a big issue...

Ok, 7.23? that .ebuild is in my net-www directory. If I download the distfile then it should pick it up and install it right?

If not, can I manually update the Portage tree/file?

**edit - I don't necessarily have to use Opera either; just a thought. If there is another browser that can authenticate with the proxy server that works too. Also, Is there any way to get the proxy service setup at the command line?

Thanks,
Paul
Copied the 7.23 ebuild to the /usr/portage/net-www/opera directory along with the Manifest, ChangeLog and digest, unmerged Opera 6.12, and emerge(d) opera and 7.23 came up. Only had to get a few more files and the emerge went over just fine.

Unfortunately, no authentication window pops up, so can't enter in my username and password for the proxy server.

Does Opera have this feature/setting, or should I try Netscape/Mozilla?

Thanks,
Paul

Hey guys,

Check this out... http://sourceforge.net/search enter NTLM

What do you think about those? Worth a shot?

Perhaps. Give it a try!

...

Has anyone tried emerging ati-drivers-extra yet? They split the ati-drivers package into a driver package and a utility package. ati-drivers emerge fine as always but ati-drivers-extra complains about being unable to find a digest and asking me to create one with 'ebuild foo.ebuild digest' as an example.

Mikhail
That just means that the checksum you downloaded wasn't updated to match the checkum the files are going to get. If you run that command, you should be able to emerge it. Or, give it a few hours and sync again and see if you get a digest then.

Thanks dirtboy. Yeah, the suggested command (changed with the correct package name ofcourse) didnt work so I left it until tomorrow.

What it does during the merge is it gets an ebuild, then gets a file that contains the checksums for the files that the ebuild will download. If the checksums in this file don't match the checksums you get from the files you downloaded, the files could be corrupted and the build will stop. This works pretty good, but every now and then you get a checksum file with the wrong value in it, so even if you get a good download of the package files, portage thinks it is corrupt and won't let you emerge it. ebuild /path/to/package.ebuild digest will put whatever value you get from checksumming the package files and put it in the checksum files, correcting this situation. Thats the quick way to do it, but eventully someone will notice that the checksum is wrong and fix it in the portage tree.
