7800GTX Overclocking for Idiots--BOOTDISK download Included! - Page 17

Just wondering, I'm assuming no one has figured out how to flash it with an unlocked bios? I figure for that we would need the bios of a similar card that would be compatible with the Dell 7800 gtx? Thats the way it can be done for desktop cards, and it would mean we could overclock through windows...

Can you post yours Auto-overclock frequencies, you can show it whit rivatuner.

Thanks

John

yeah im still not sure whether or not auto OC actually works with these cards. Most people say it doesnt, hence the need for a bios flash, but can you get it to work after the bios flash? I would say no as why would all these people bother flashing if they could just auto OC once they did the flash.

Hi,

on which way I can put the setting´s back to the originals???
I don´t find those settings on the tool from "hammermd".

Please help me.

Thanks

Auto overclocking does work, it's just too... general? slipshod? I dunno the correct word here, but it's not safe. I would like to see if anyone could flash his/her card with an unlocked BIOS, that would rule. Technically you could just take a sager 7800GTX's BIOS, change the device ID #'s to match those of a Dell 7800GTX, and have at it. It would be insane if this would trick the Dell into accepting the card while enabling FULL software overclocking functionality. Of course, this is banking on the fact that Dell cards are only software (BIOS) locked, and that the flashing wouldn't kill the card due to unforeseen complications. Anyway, something to think about, but I can't kill my new 7800GTX when it comes in as I can't stand this X600 as it is .

EDIT: milkman, check the CD for something that says "Original.rom" or something, or clocks at 400/1060, which are the factory clocks.

So auto-overclocking does work, but not manual overclocking where you can select the speeds?

Does auto-OC work before the bios flash? I think i read on here that it doesnt actually apply the clocks, is that correct?

And an unlocked bios would rock. I would assume that these Dell cards would just be reference nvidia cards, and would be identical, except for their connector, to other laptop cards. But then laptops are different to desktops, and they may have some Dell only features... Well im not game to kill my card when it comes in trying to find out. Who is?

And Mr K6. What happened to your 7800? I dont remember reading that it died, so whats the deal? Did i miss a thread?

All overclocking is is that the card will overclock itself a bit in 3D applications and then downclock itself once the app exits. You can't really see the change ( I dont think) except for the performance improvement. Auto overclocking should work without any mods, try it out if you want.

Sold it, bought another one, kept on trucking

Mr. K6, i have tried two 7800's now with fresh AS5, and i cannot get them stable over 430Mhz running ATI Tool for ~ 6 hrs. Any higher and ATI Tool starts crapping out bad pixels left and right. Is your card stable with ATI Tool at 460/1240 for an extended length of time? I always find that people crank their cards up on here just to get a super high snapshot, but in reality its not stable at those speeds. Everyone is either way luckier than I am or not telling the whole truth.

Thoughts?

Mr. k6 is really lucky. Note that there is a gap between hs and core, either fill it with as5, copper AND as5, exchanging the screws, or have very little contact (high fast heat, very instable). 6 hrs is a lot lol^^. As long as it's stable for half an hour, you know your pretty good. Or if your stable for 10 min, but you only get few deltas. On a graphics card an artifact doesnt mean crash, just a visual deffect, usually pretty small actually, depends on what it says.

lol, yah, 6 hours is quite excessive. I am 35 minutes + stable, and that's good enough. Games play fine and I get absolutely no visual anomolies or artifacts, so I am stable. How do games play for you Ozy?

They run fine, and i should stop nit picking the OC and pushing it to its breaking edge. I primarly play WoW and BF2 only. I'm just SOOOOOOO happy that this card doesn't hit 95c like my 6800 Ultra did and underclock to protect itself. This card runs at 88c. I let it run for 12 hrs at 430/1100 so far without issue in ATI Tool. That gave me a 7075 3Dmark05. My 6800 Ultra would hit 95c and throttle back within 10 minutes of running ATI Tool (and in Bf2 also!)

Does anyone know if in 2D mode, if the 7800 is running at a slower clock rate? The 6800 Ultra ran full speed all the time due to the bios lock. This destroyed battery life on the XPS2.

Scored 7801 3dmarks!!!

This is likely the only time you'd ever want 1 less in your 3dmark05 score! Installed my new pinmod yesterday and then late last night tossed in my new 7800GTX and ran 3dmark05 and got an almost perfect score only missing by 1.

Score: 7801

If you look in ATiTool, you'll see a set of three clocks, one for 2D, one for low power 3D, and one for high power 3D. All are full functional after flashing I believe, and I don't see why they wouldn't be. I'll do some checks and tests and see what I come up with .

Thanks! I got 7859 a few nights ago but was offline at the time. I think I can break the 8k mark when I have the time to rip the system open again and make a few more changes.

Ok, so a few questions.

Does it matter what BIOS version I currently have on my motherboard when I go to do this? I currently have A05. Anyone successfully do this on this version?

Should I unplug my USBs so that it doesn't draw any excess power from the card / process. Has anyone flashed their card using up 4 USB ports?
Well I went ahead and did it - 440C 1250. Came out with a 3Dmark05 of 7373. Stable and no artifacts. Successfully done with A05 BIOS. I haven't attempted to plug all my USBs back in but I'm going to do that soon.

Temps were reasonable, about 2 degrees hotter than they normally were in stock.

Hi,

Link is dead or I have to wait foreever is there another way.
stupid rapid share.

Thanks,

Just put my 7800 in and it heated up to 95c in FarCry... damnit...
I'll apply some AS5 and maybe fiddle around with some copper, but so far this doen't look promising.

(mind you, I had auto OC on, that may have pushed it up too...)
