7800GTX Overclocking for Idiots--BOOTDISK download Included! - Page 5

I tried it for about 12 minutes and didn't get any errors. However, I played F.E.A.R for like a half an hour and got this weird green pixelated thingy.

I'm going to overclock it back to 450/1200.

I was able to run beta 8 for more than 7 hours without an error at 450/1200 (see my post above). 440/1250 ran for 60 min before I stopped it, but the 3dmark05 score was lower for me than the 450/1200 score so that's where I'm stuck at.

I'm going to try the beta 9 tool this evening on 445/1250 and 455/1200. Both appeared stable in gaming and 3dmark05 but ATI tool beta 8 found errors after approx 10 min. I just want to verify that the tool wasn't the problem.

From the beta 9 release notes: "Artifact scanning on X1000 series might not be 100% reliable yet"

Which leads me to believe it might not be totally reliable on non-ATI hardware yet as well.

Niwotian60, do you have AS5 applied to your 7800? I wonder if I would see a big improvement in temp and clock speeds if I put it on.

Yes, I have both my CPU and GPU AS5'd. My max GPU temp so far has been 86c. I can reach that by running ATI Tool for more than 30 min or so. My max CPU temp is 59c which I hit running Prime95 24.14 in stress test mode (my normal max CPU temp is 57c). I AS5'd the 7800 before I installed it so I don't have a baseline, but I do know that my 6800U would hit mid 90's under stress before I AS5'd it and it would still hit 90 after I AS5'd it.

AS5'ing probably won't help your scores if you are getting artifacts. If your GPU overheats your system will reboot or lock up, and you will sometimes get an audible alert first. The Go7800 cards are undervolted compared to the desktop cards to manage heat, so the lack of voltage seems to be the performance barrier.

How are you guys getting 6700 stock? No matter what drivers I use I can't even get 6500. I've turned off everything I can think of and tops was 6490. When I detect optimal OC settings I get 462/1.16 Mem seems to be low compared to what I'm seeing posted here, where people are trying 1200 +. Do you think maybe I have a crappy card?

My stock score was 6606 with the XG ME 81.94 (quality) drivers. You don't list your system specs but I suspect you have the 2.0 CPU rather than the 2.13.

Forget the autooverclocking and detect optimal settings and try HammerMD's latest ISO disk if you want to try o/c'ing. I would start at 440/1150 and work up, testing it with ATI Tool beta 9. I'm pretty sure everyone will be able to get to 7300+ stable.

My system specs are:

CPU: 2.13
Mem: 1 Gig
HD: 60 Gig 72K
XP Media Center Edition 2002
7800 Go GTX Using Dell 78.30 drivers.

Have tried (81.85, 81.87 & 81.94) Performance dropped by around 50-75 points for each of these.

I'm not to sure on how to create a disk from an ISO image.

Hmmm,

First, are you running the freeware version of 3DMark05? If you have the pro version, make sure and run the vanilla 1024x768 0xAA 0xAF settings. Also, make sure you haven't set your Nvidia console to force AA and/or AF.

Second, I would recommend downloading DriverCleaner Pro, using it to wipe out your current Nvidia drivers, and then reinstall the Xtreme Mobile Edition 81.94 drivers from scratch (I prefer the quality tweak, but the performance tweak will add 50-100 more 3dmark05). You can get these from the TweaksRUs website.

Third, make sure your laptop is plugged in and running at the full 2130 rate (ie, it isn't stepping down). Kill your antivirus, software firewall, and any other non-essential programs.

If after all of these you still aren't seeing scores near 6600, I don't have a clue. As for burning an ISO image - most CD/DVD software burning programs have support for burning an ISO image directly to a CD (an ISO image is basically just a compressed CD image -ISO 9660 format). But if this is new to you, I suggest you may want to hold off on something like reflashing a custom bios. Although it is generally pretty safe if you know what you are doing, it definitely can cause damage.

I'm running the freeware version of 3DMark05, I have also tried the DriverCleaner. Is disabling the same as turning off? I disable NAV/Firewall but the icon is still always in the tray. I disable all the AOL stuff.

I'm really sorry that different drivers are giving you a lower score. It really doesn't matter if your score is higher or lower by a few points, rememeber that. You aren't even playing a game. Try not to base the best driver on what one gives the best 3dmark.

If you want more performance put the driver on high performance.

First of all THANK YOU to Hammermd and Showman for making this possible.
I'm relatively new to computers so all this is new to me, with that said this was a really enjoyable experience
With the step by step instructions even I couldnt mess up
Here are the numbers:
455c1100~ 7015 3Dmarks
450c1150~ 7118 3Dmarks
450c1200~ 7238 3Dmarks

Hammermd,

Could you add 430/1150 to the boot cd?
I think that will get us to the desktop settings which is probably the highest some of us may want to go?
desktop is 430/1200.

i am personally a little disappointed that my 7800 isn't completely stable @ 430/1200 in atitool.

430/1150 and 430/1200 are already on there, guys...I'm glad everyone's finding this thing so useful...I can't believe that site I uploaded the disk to is completely free with all the bandwidth abuse that must go on...

I do not think AtiTool is very trust worthy right now. I've played Half-life, WoW, Doom3, Quake4 and I do not see any visul effects from overclocking. I'm currently clocked at 440/1200. In Rivatuner the clocks are reported as 438.2/1197

450/1250: 7371 :-)

I'm trying to create my own .rom files using NiBitTor then burn them onto the CD. When I try to flash I get some kind of mismatch error saying my board is unknown. Has anyone else gotten this problem? I think maybe I'm doing something wrong when saving the edited BIOS in NiBitTor. Here is what I'm doing:

Tools...Read Bios...Select Device
I choose my card
Read Bios into NiBitTor (After I do this, vendor says Unknown)
Adjust clock settings
Save Bios
Burn to CD

Am I missing anything here? Thanks

Yes, vendor says 'unknown' for me, too...also, when I flash, it says 'unrecognized board' or some such; however, the crc numbers (or whatever the hell they are) are always exactly the same...those strings of numbers should be exactly the same as one another (I think one is read from the BIOS and the other is read from the file to be flashed)...I take five seconds and scan quickly for any differences whenever I flash, just in case I made a mistake creating the file...anyhow, if all you change is the core and memory clocks and save the file, it should be fine...just select 'Y' when you flash and no worries! THe only thing that could really fubar your card is if you accidentally put the DDR speed into the memory clock slot in Nibitor...though that is very unlikely, even, since it shows you the final speed right next to the window...go for it, bud!
Well, I think I might know what the problem is. I could have to do with something as stupid as me not burning the .rom files properly. I was just burning them straight onto the CD that contains the .iso you gave everyone. The files seem to burn ok and show up when I do a dir/w but there must be something screwed with just straight burning. I'm going to download the new .iso you provided and try that. Did you by chance put any 1350 mem clock .roms on there? Anyone else try that high?

No, I didn't. You should be able to edit the .iso with any program that allows this...it was created with UltraISO, so you might try that (jam it in a Google)...
