Recovering a raid mode 0 striped array

Thread Starter
I had the same overheating issues many on these forums have mentioned, and have been asked to send my a51-m 7700 back to the depot for repairs.

My problem is this - like a bad user, I got behind on backing up my essential files on a raid 0 array...

And so here I am: Alienware warns me over and over, in their documentation, and in person over the phone, that they very likely will have to reformat my hard disks during the repair process, so they tell me I am responsible for getting whatever data I want off my hard disks on my own.

They give me all kinds of pointers on how to use adapter cables to connect my laptop drives to a PC to transfer the data - but they are just not seeming to understand nor care when I tell them that the data is in a striped raid array that likely can only be read by an onboard promise 378 RAID controller, and possibly only one with the exact firmware revision as the motherboard Alienware supplies.

So what I proposed to them was that I send the computer back to them, sans hard disks and have them repair it (the mobo probably needs replacing) then have them ship back to me, whereupon I replace the hard disks and pray that the RAID controller can recognize the existing array. Has anyone here ever done this, or had any experience with this kind of thing? Any idea of how likely it is to work?
