Hi all,

i just bought quake 4 today. i was able to install the game without any problems. however, when i start a new game, i get no sound. i check the sound setting and i get a message saying that openal isn't supported. is there a driver i need to install?

also when i tried to run quake 4 in ultra high setting, quake 4 always crashes. i assume that i don't have enough ram for it. am i correct?

tia!

i9300, 1gig ram and geforce 6800 256mb video card.

the ultra high setting is for 512 mb video cards

It does use 512 Mb of texture memory but I it can use the system ram as well. It runs horribly if you don't have a sizeable amount of ram becuase of disk caching.

i can run the game at 'high' graphic setting, but i just wanna see what the 'ultra high' setting has to offer.. i guess i need to increase my virtual memory..

anyone has any idea why the game has no sound? i'm using the onboard sound card. thanks.

You can increase the virtual memory to play at ultra settings.. but think about it the peak data rate on your hard drive with a 7200 rpm 60 gb is 80 Mb/s while the bandwidth on ram is in the area of gigabytes/s. If you you use a setting that was meant for ram to store data and you use the Hard disk it's obviously going to have performance issues.
