Anyone else a little bit disappointed with the upgrade to the 7800 GTX Go? - Page 3

I spent a little over $400 for my upgrade (only fools pay the $599 listed on Dell's site) and 2 days later (post upgrade) don't regret it a bit. F.E.A.R. showed the biggest difference for me, followed by Quake 4 and Battlefront 2, all new games I play a great deal. I noticed F.E.A.R. the most only because I was mid-way through it when I switched cards; with the 6800 Go Ultra I got stuttering and low frames at 1680x1050 (1920x1200 was unplayable for me), with the 7800 everything was silky smooth without a hitch in sight. After flashing to 450/1200 I was able to run 1920x1200 as well, with everything turned up except volume shadows. Battlefront 2 now runs much smoother, especially the space missions.

3dmark scores and older, non-graphic intensive games like WoW (I play WoW too and believe me, it isn't the video taxing the hardware) don't tell the whole story and that is all there is to it. You can try to make yourself feel better for spending the money or try to make yourself feel better for NOT spending it and argue on internet forums all day long, but facts are facts - the 7800 is a big jump for newer games.

I'm glad somebody else sees this. 3dmark is a good reference point.....but the fact remains that a 7800 will deal with certain things much better than a 6800. People have been seeing a 40 percent increase in fps in FEAR which is much more than the increase in 3dmark. Don't just take 3dmark scores and assume they are an absolute indication of performance across the board. As for me, I went from a 6800 go non-ultra to the 7800, so the performance difference was night and day for me. I was lagging behind my friends xps, desperately trying to overclock my card to shorten the gap, and I could clearly see a difference between mine and his......and now for 374 dollars I leapfrogged him with a laptop that cost 2000 dollars less than his!! I have no complaints

I've been wanting to ask...why the hell do you still troll around these boards if you were so disappointed in your laptop. I've noticed a bunch of negative posts from you giving opinions on hardware and software you don't even own, trying to put down on us dell lappy owners that are more than happy with our purchases. Just had to spit that out.

Pretty happy with the 7800go, but I jumped from an ATI9600. Maybe if I had a 6800go I wouldn't be so happy, but I think it is a great card.

I can't play the latest and greatest with EVERYTHING maxed, but FEAR ran fine for me at 1920x1200 with nearly maxed settings. (No soft shadows, med quality shadows, 2x AA, 8x AF). The game played well and looked great. I would hate to see how my 9600 would do with that workload.

What makes you think I was disappointed with my laptop? I wanted a change, a complete change, just like you wanted a change by upgrading to the 7800. I saw that upgrading (for me) would be a dead end in terms of what will be coming down the line. These are laptops and in order to keep upgrading them down the line it's going to cost a lot of money, money I don't have. And if the XPS ends up supporting the dual core processor am I going to be dumb enough to dump another $1,000 + just for that setup? Nah, I'll pass. I don't need to blow a total of 4k just to keep a laptop top of the line. In my case, I did a complete trade for what I have, I upgraded my mobo to an SLI board and got a CPU cooler, a $150 well spent. I like to OC my computer too, and the XPS was making me mad with the constant flashing and crap.

I don't care if you don't like my negativity here. I'm not going to be all nice and friendly to people who don't search for a lot of topics. If it wasn't for me, 5150, and Yagiska (who's not here anymore ) you wouldn't be flashing your video cards, you'd be comparing your AUTO OC scores..... whoo hooo See sig for my super long 6800Go Ultra reboot thread.

I think others can agree with me on this, no one wants to see post of the same nature that keep popping up.

I'm a nice guy, just not all the time. I like this forum, I like to see how laptops are progressing, I mean I did own a Gen 2. I don't plan on leaving

Now next time I want to upgrade I don't have to buy a new machine, just a new mobo and CPU.

Next laptop will be a small one. No more gaming laptops for me.

Oh get off your high horse. You didn't like the laptop for whatever reason, you moved to a desktop, congratulations we're all very happy for you. That still doesn't give you a reason to troll half the threads here in a forum dedicated to laptop users about how stupid you thought the XPS 2 was or how a SLI setup is so much better for gaming (you don't say), etc. Give me a break.

Yes I said the XPS2 is stupid and SLI is best for gaming

No...point is like the other guy said...Stop hopping on your high horse and running your mouth to people posting on a forum for hardware you don't even own anymore. It's not shoman'snotebookforums.com, and until it is...stop posting to people like they are 9 years old.

Just my two cents. I am very happy with my new 7800 GTX.

As for shoman, well he has been helpfull here for a long time. It is too bad he sold his XPS2 in favor of a desktop rig.

As for the XPS2, well Shoman, i don't think it is stupid. But hay. Everyone is entitled to opinions. Even if they are perhaps a little inflamitory for a XPS2 user group.

I never said the XPS was stupid.

I know. I was just kidding. I was adding to the overall sarcasm level.

Edit> Cheers bro. You have always been very helpful. Just look at your fearsome post count. LOL!!! 2747!! Christ man! I am reg the same date and i only have 300 and a bit. You are one verbose fellow.

imo the go 7800gtx could have been better. While I aknwoledge that 3dmark05 isn't a good benchmark (imo), the go 6800u got ~5k. The go 7800gtx gets ~6.6k.
Thats only 1.6k more then the previous, or 32% more. I thought graphics cards moved move then a third each upgrade.
If the GTX go was as powerful as the desktop GTX or GT you'd be seeing up to a 52% improvement from a stock ultra scoring 5000 and a stock GTX scoring 7600.
Dude, the 7800 Go GTX is only 10-15% slower than the desktop GTX. You can make most or all of that up with overclocking. Most people won't even want/need to. It's an amazing part, and it's also amazing how quickly the performance/price gap is closing between notebooks and desktops. If you sell your old stuff to help pay for new stuff the cost of incremental upgrading is not really that high, I don't see why people get so worked up or just give up when a new technology comes around. If you really want it you can find a way to afford it
post #54 of 86
Well, most stock desktop GTX's score about 8k so that would put it about 21% faster then the mobile counterpart. Heck my buds 7800GT scores about 8k OCd.

I got 7254 on my last 3d mark run-through (450/1200) , which is probably comparable to the default speeds of a 7800 GT.

But everyone has to remember the compact nature of a laptop (its formfactor), the amount of power it draws and the fact it is by definition a travel computer placed on a lap when comparing the GPU to desktop parts (so it can't be a space heater).

I don't see anyone harping on the fact there isn't a mobile processor that can keep up with a FX-57, X2 4800, Pentium D 3.2 EE or Pentium 4 680.

Or our DVD burners aren't 16X. Or we we can't have 500 GB harddrives.

There is a trade off for mobility (i.e. upgrading, not having to wait for the manufacturer to make parts specifically engineered for the laptop, etc).

^^^and there is no way the Go GTX can really keep up with the desktop models. There are GTs getting close to 9,000 and GTXs breaking 10,000 in 3dmark 05, albeit with alternative cooling methods.

We're not even talking about the X1800XT or 7800 GTX 512, which can easily clear 10,000 (waiting to see 11,000)

And for those unhappy with the upgrade and want a better gaming rig.

You could sell the XPS and head on over to the Dell Outlet and buy a Dimension 9100 (at this time of night, they go for cheap, like $400-575). Purchase a modem, graphic card of choice and enjoy some serious gaming power (though you would be limited later by Dell's retarded cases and other propietary gear when upgrading).

When playing typical games like BF2 and FEAR can you really see a differnce with 7800 GTX being overclocked and non O/Ced?
Yes! At least I can with my 6800U in games like FEAR and BF2, teh difference is quite noticeable especially the responsiveness of mouse and keyboard input. Higher FPS = higher responsiveness and playability, I get about a 15% overclock which is definitely noticeable.
Yes I agree that 3DMark05 is an unreliable test for comparing video cards. I also Disagree about buying 7800 gtx so you can play FEAR one reolution higher. I had a test earlier over several drivers to test out best gaming performace b/w drivers 78.11 was my highest scored driver for 3Dmark but stutter occasionally in games. XtremeG is good but Also stutter sometimes. But ever since i upgrade to Dells 78.51 Every game I ran is smooth as silk including FEAR. I did the fear test and get an average of 40 fps on ultra non overclock. The setting for the game is High CPU and Maximum Graphic w/1440x900 resolution. The test stated that my lowest fps was 19 but thats in the beginning of the test. i use Frap to monitor fps during the game. So if I overclock I'll probably get an average of 45-50 fps (my guess). Im also guessing that 7800 gtx get about an average of 56-60 fps but then again its just my guess. Oveall performance of the 7800 gtx is probably an extra 10-15 fps over ultra. Now is 10-15fps really worth 400-600 dollar upgrade? I cant speak for the rest of everyone but ever since I upgrade my hd to a 100gb 7k100 w/ new Dell driver everyone of my game run smooth including FEAR. There might be some dips once in a while but then again I bet the 7800 also get the dip. Not to mention playing 1440 x900 resolution doesn't really look that bad at all. But overall I really like to know what other xps2 owners think of my opinion as well as sharing their own.

Sigh....I ALWAYS want more power.
There is no doubt any XPS2 or 9300 is going to run better with the 7800GTX. I'm just hoping to see a $300 for this card not $600 then I can justify a little smoother gaming XPS2. I don't even have 3dmark installed on my HD anymore. Gaming results is the most important! I understand the need for the constant "MORE POWER SCOTTY" addiction
