DVD playback problem on 8890

I had my 8890 for a while now, but never played any DVD on it. Last week, I tried to play "Finding Nemo" , but the comp won't play it. 1 tried:
1. using Real One Player (free one), and after the warning no copyright frames, it exited and my Windows XP says Real One player encountered a problem. Tell Microsoft about it? Send Report or Don't send
2. Using Microsoft Media Player ver 9.0, same thing. After Warning no copyright frames, it quits and my XP says Windows media player encountered a problem. Tell Microsoft about it? Send Report or Don't send.
3. Using Roxio player (part of Roxio CD & DVD Creator 6.0), it plays the DVD, but no sound.

Anyone have any idea why this is happening and how to solve it? I want to watch DVD on the nice 8890 screen. Thank.

Have you tried the included WinDVD 4? It sounds like your software dvd-decoder is freaking out.

not yet. I thought Real One Player, Windows Media Player and Roxio Player has dvd decoder.
I will try the included WinDVD 4 tonite. I will update. Do I need to uninstall Real One Player, Win Media Player and Roxio Player to have WinDVD 4 dvd-decoder kicks in?

No... I happen to know that Windows Media Player does not have its own decoder because it asked for one when I didn't install WinDVD after a clean format. It appears that Windows Media Player is using the RealOne decoder, which would explain why you were getting the same error for both of them. I don't know why the Roxio wouldn't work though. However, if WinDVD doesn't work, you'll have to try a total reformat of the system.

I had the same problem. I just installed WinDVD4 and everything worked fine! You need a software decoder to play back DVD's. You should not have to re-install anything.

Sorry, I have not gotten the chance to touch my lappy till tonite. I installed WinDVD 4 that comes with the lappy and it worked. I played it in Windows Media Player, it also worked. In Roxio Player, no sound. Oh well... As long I can watch DVD on this super power lappy

Performance difference I noticed is the audio output from WinDVD is better than Windows Media Player. The sound is richer.

Thank a lot James Huang. You rocks
