linux AV tool

Just pucrhased a Samsung x06 laptop and very happy with it apart that battery doesn't last long enough to allow kids to watch a DVD.

I beleive it's possible to create a small partition and install a Linux based AV tool. This will allow me to boot straight into the AV tool and watch DVD's or play music. In theory the battery will last longer as it won't have to support the full XP OS.

I've got Partition Magic to create the partition but I don't know how big to make it and which sofware to install on it. Oh and I don't want to spend any money.

Any advice greatfully received.

Thanks in advance

Jimmy

if you are refering to the linux-based feature that some modern laptops have taht allows you to watch a movie without actually booting a full-blown OS, then it think i can help.
