Problems with the Zd7k
Evil Juggalo,
I feel your pain. I went and created an account here because I felt I needed to provide what help I can since I, and a whole LOT of other people, happen to be in the same situation you are in. I’ve got an NX9500 with the same problem.
The problem you are experiencing, where the screen goes black and usually won’t come back on, is actually Really common. When HP designed the ZD7k series laptop and the NX9500 notebook, they did not provide nearly enough cooling for the Nvidia 5700 Go chipset and as a result, the chipset almost invariably dies within the first year of the laptop's life. Essentially, this is a design flaw.
So far, everyone who has had the motherboard replaced with the same 5700 based board has had the problem come back within a few weeks to a few months time. About two weeks ago HP finally admitted that the laptop was defective. Unfortunately, being the cheap company that they are, they sent out an internal memo to all their reps to try and get the customer agreement to downgrade the video chipset to the 5600 instead. For any gamer this is an unacceptable fix. However, I understand that the people who have been downgraded are no longer having problems so if gaming performance is not important to you then your returned laptop should be fine.
Anyway, the motherboards for the ZD7k and NX9500 are backordered by almost two months because of this problem. HP simply cannot have them manufactured fast enough to meet demand.

Lockergnome has a copy of the internal HP memo. There are some usefull internal phone numbers in it: :

There is presently a class action lawsuit brewing against HP for this very issue:

If HP doesn’t resolve this issue, you might mention this class action lawsuit to help get the ball rolling. Good luck!
