AW heat and noise question

Hey guys, i was trying to decide whether to go with AW 16" 3.0ghz or dell 8600 15.4 wuxga 1.7m . and decided to go with Alienware, the only question i have is how much noise does this beast make? I'd really like a quiet lappie, and also what about heat, does it really get hot..... I dont plan to play games all the time, mostly for programming and 3d modeling. Thanks

Well the AW is not that different in the noise department as the Dell 8600. I compared my A51m and my friends 8600 and they are almost exactly the same. The Dell will probably produce less heat because it has a Centrino processor. With gaming both of the systems look like they will perform the same but once you start playing a game the 8600 the performance goes way down. Since you want something for 3D designing the A51m will be fine with the ATI card choice. The nVidia lacks certain things with 3D design.

Hope this helps!

whoho!!! wasnt that last part just too wrong. nvidia has far better openGL support, and as most 3dapplications (maya, 3dsmax, lightwave, and so on) uses opengl it is far far better to get the nvidia one for them.

If you look at reviews they show that nVidia cards currently don't support all of the textures needed for 3d design. The Ati supports all of them. I still like nVidia's more and that is why I got the nVidia in my desktop. I've been with them longer than ATI. The only time I had an ATI in a computer was in my first computer and in the A51m.

Also how portable is the alienware? i'd need to carry it sometimes. Thanks for all your replies =)

It's pretty portable. It's about 9 pounds. You can hold it in your arm or lean it against your side while holding it.

ive just ditched my 51m2 for an inspiron 8600(with m10 pro)..

the 51m2 is fairly noisey as laptops go. but needs the fans running to cool the beast of a cpu.

as for the inspiron performance in games.. as long as you disable speed step.. games run very very nicely.. speed step will cause pauses and sub standard performance if enabled(evebn though its supposed to run the cpu at full speed when playin away). its intellegence is rather dubious.. but works fine witin the windows ''office'' type enviroment or whilst watching dvds. and does give better battery life..

If you notice on reviews with Dells in them that when it comes to gaming the performance is usually half of what the better PC is getting. Centrino are slow with gaming.
