Cooling Fans and Thermal Paste

Thread Starter
Recently, my Sager 8890 had been running really loud, because the fans never seemed to turn off. Of course I popped popped open the CPU compartment and took out the heat sink. To my horror, there was a huge thick cover of lint covering every inch of the heatsink intake Im surprised my laptop didn't overheat. As a I was puttin it back, I noticed that there was some residue on both the heatsink and CPU, remenants of thermal paste or something. Im sure its no harm this time, but I am going to undoubtedly have to clean the heatsink in the future. Should I throw some extra thermal paste in there? Have any of you experienced this problem too?

Man that's never good....regularly cleaning the heatsink intake out is very very good habit to start. About cleaning the heatsink and applying thermal paste, I recently made a guide to this very thing. It's over in the Sager 56xx Tech Support section, but here's a link.

Hope this helps

It's for the 5680, but the instructions still apply for the 8890.

I followed those instructions roughly for my 4780 (didn't lap though) and it must make one HELLUVA difference, because my fan comes on a lot less now. It used to be about 95/5 on/off, now its more like 25/75! if that

I was disapointed by the size of the heatsink in the 4780 though, it was about 2x2". there was this black metal box filling up the other part that is vented out the back

it appears that the heatsink is a heatpipe disign- only about 2x2 is directly on top of the processor, everything else is off to the side where the fans can blow on them. So, heat from the hot processor area gets sucked off to the side and blown out by the fans. No need to be disappointed...

yes, it would be impossible to cool such a processor without a heatpipe in the 4780 chassis. the problem is that little black box... i want to know what it is, and why i cant have a full size heatsink with a second duct to keep temperatures down like on the 56xx series. their heatsinks are well over 2x the length of a 4780s.
its really a silly design, there is that extra fan inlet port that is blocked off, and then that black box (which is just folded sheet metal), I could lift it up about a 1/4"

do you know what its purpose is? i think it would be rather nice to get a secondary fan going and perhaps an extended heatsink.

I really have to artic silver my 5680 - with my cooling pad its not like my fans are on much - but all the same. I think I will call by CC tonight and grab some paste.

Holy crap! I didnt realize there were so many people in the Toronto area on these forums!

Yeah, I think CanadaComptuers has AC3 on their site. They have a few stores, though, so you might want to call first.

ingrid, it looks like its just a 'blanking' thing, because on the back, there are vent slots in front of it. The heatsink could go extend to where that black box is, and another fan could be installed under the blanked-out fan port, but they chose not to! The black box is probably to keep hot air from the one fan from just pooling around inside, but to go out the only open vent in the back.
My question for Sager/Clevo or whatever is... does not my 3ghz P4 in my 4780 get just as hot as a 3ghz P4 in a 5xxxx?

MadMax, it really made my 4780 more liveable, because really, my fan was on all the time, except for the occasional 15second break, now I honestly think it is on about 5-10% of the time.
