5th Gen iPod review

That's kinda a first draft of it. Probably a few spelling mistakes and whatnot, but still pretty complete. Don't mind the comments in the shoutbox there. It's just a few friends messing around.

And yeah, UWaterloo 4 lyfe.

EDIT: Moving everything over to the new host as opposed to using the UWaterloo account. It should look okay. Tell me otherwise. :/

Oh man ... the new iPod look absolutely amazing ... I'm hoping to get one in January (black).

Yeah .. why no FM or voice recording. I agree: how hard can that be?

Ever tried navigating the Iriver .. oh man .. you have to open up the manual to figure it out.

When you go into the store and see the ipod compared to other players (at the same price). At this point, the ipod is the way to go.

Thanks for the great review!!

I guess in a way you could act as if there is no video. Cause it's really the same. You get a bigger color screen, a slightly larger HD, and it's the same price as the last iPod.

I think the black looks great - I never really liked the all-white color scheme.

Can you turn off the screen?

You can turn off the backlight, but then it becomes hard to see. If you're under light, you can still see it with a slight bit of difficulty. The screen's transflective (I think that's what they call it), but basically, ambient light reflects off the pixels and can be seen even if the backlight isn't projecting it.

A little update on the last page with some higher resolution pics. They're a little better quality than the ones I had before, although after compressing them, they kinda look cruddy again.

For the 30GB it's rated at 2 hours and for the 60GB it's 3 hours. I timed slightly more than 2 hours on my 30GB.

Well, iTunes does take a little while for it to sync the iPod. Probably 20-30 seconds so you have to wait a bit. You could try getting the latest version of iTunes if you don't have it as well.

If you go into windows explorer does the iPod show up as a removable disk even? Have you tried it on a different computer? (I know you said your laptop's getting fixed, but do you have a friend that'll let you load up iTunes?)

Do you have WinXP SP2 installed? There may be some useful information here:

Sounds like your iPod isn't formatted for use with Windows...? Scroll down in the about menu and see what it's formatted for, Windows or OSX. I had a feeling that it was multiplatform now out of the box. But in either case, this sounds a lot like your problem.

What about the Creative Zen Vision:M? Seems like a sweet alternative to the generation 5 iPod. I've used Creative mp3 players in the past, and they have a few models which really shine, particularly the Zen micro. The FM radio is great when you get tired of your onboard music collection, the recorders are nice, the design is fine. The sound quality is awesome, not to mention the removable battery (and new batteries are not hard to obtain). I think the Vision will improve upon all that.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with the iPod, but alternatives and competition is always great.

Well, the battery is no longer removable on the Vision:M. :P

But I had to agree, the player looks like a solid competitor to the iPod, a bit thicker, yes, but the video playing capabilities (and battery life for video) is way better. (more supported formats) I'd have to say it's a good looking player and as long it isn't riddled with bugs like my Zen Micro was, it would be a great alternative. On the other hand the Zen Micro got pretty good reviews too but when users actually started using them, lots of problems arose.

I'll be keeping an eye for it. One can never have too many DAPs right?
