Operating System Woes

ok heres the fix. I have a copy of windows 2000 pro, should I bother spending the $140 on XP pro? Are there any significant improvements? My only worry is since the sager is using brand new parts (since XP came out) that the driver situation for 2000pro will be horrible. Just curious.

no problem

The driver CD supplied by Sager comes with Windows 2000 drivers on it (as well as Win98/ME and XP drivers). You should have no problem with it.
I ordered my 8886 with Windows 2000 on it... works just as well as anything else.

Like mentioned before, Sager sends a driver cd for 2000/XP. If you don't want to have the OS pre-installed the driver cd still comes with it, so you can use your own copy of Windows 2000. Just make sure to get the latest service pack for Win2000, I think its SP3. With the service pack and the driver cd, you shouldnt have any problems

If you are planning on using a hyperthreaded processor you should go with XP, other wise there isnt a pressing reason to Jump to XP.

If you are planning on doing any gaming, Win2K is a complete no-go. As far as stability and reliability, they are about the same. I ran both for about 1 year each.

Cheers.

I also have used both and I must say I like XP better. 2000 is more of a corporate OS, but it is stable and reliable. Like Yael2006 said, if you plan on gaming and doing multimedia tasks go with XP.

why is 2000 worse at gaming and multimedia?

Just less support for games in general, no compatability mode, and it actually utilizes resources in a way less conducive to gaming.

There are many threads about this topic that you might search for using the search button on the top right... Many great points were brought up at that point about both operating systems.

Also, Win2K doesn't have backward compatibility emulation, which effectively cuts down on any older gaming options. This is specially true of all those DOS-based "goldies."

Cheers.
