HL2, what should I do?

Ok, I just re-installed HL2 last night. Took all freakin night to update btw. I started the game up today, and it was working good. I decided to change the screen resolution in the options on that game. After I did it and clicked apply, the screen went black and the computer locked up. Nothing would work, and I finally had to just turn it off and back on for it to get going again. After that I tried to start the game again. This time when the game was starting, i never even got a visual, all i got was noise. I couldn't do anything because I didn't have a visual. Ctrl - Alt -Delete didn't work either. All i had was a black screen. So then I tried it a few more times while cursing furiously and holding back the urge to throw the laptop across the room. Is there any way that I can change the screen resolution without starting the game first, because since all I get when I start the game is a black screen, and its kinda hard to change the resolution when you can't see anything? lol, sorry for rambling on so much, I just a little pissed with this stuff atm.

Thanks,
Danny

I had the same problem, and a reinstall was the only fix.

It happened when I changed it to Widescreen mode.

*cries*

Well, *curses furiously about Steam and Half-Life* Is there some file in the HL2 folder that would have something to do with saving settings that I could just delete or modify?

I'm sure there must be an alterable config file. You'd probably have more of a chance of an answer by posting on the steam forums though.
