Well, in essence that is what I will be doing if I can dust off those bills and just make the plunge. Can you provide some links as to the reviews you read?

Here's one early one to get started. http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/11/...t_and_furious/

Basically just looked around google for 7k100 comparison, 7k100 benchmark, 7k100 review, etc.

Ok, i am almost ready to take the plunge, but first has anyone seem this drive any cheaper than $209.00? This is for the 100GB model not the 80GB.

I haven't, that's not a bad price by the way...come-on, you know you want it !!!!

i would love the extra space, but $200 just to gain 40GB? doesn't seem worth it. i have no idea what life is like with the orginal 100gb drive since i purchased the 60gb hitachi immediately. i have a wd 3.5" caviar drive that i have in a firewire enclosure for extra capacity. it seems to me 3.5" hard drives come down in price, but there must be a difference for lappy stuff, which i don't have as much experience with.

Well I ordered it sunday night. It should be here wednesday. I will do some benchmarking with both drives empty and both full of my stuff and post the ATTO scores. I will also take both drives offline and bechmark them to avoid the pagfile screwing with the bechmarks. I sure hope that 7K100 is faster. With my 7K60 as packed as it is, it benches like a 5400RPM.

BTW, does anyone here know where I can download a fully functional FREE HDTACH?

You would be gaining more than just 40GB. The 7k100 series has better performance than the 7k60 (I also have a 7k60). Now, if the performance increase + 40Gb mandates $200? That's still a good question. I don't know how much of a tangible difference there is in performance between the 7k100 and 7k60 series.

I hope I will be able to shed some light on benchmarks and REAL WORLD feel. I will be going from a NOV 04' build 7k60 directly to a DEC 05'/JAN 06' build 7k100. I really hope that after I purchase the 7k100 that hitachi doesn't decide to modify the firmware to boost performance. Alot of companies revise their firmware after the drives comes out to work out bugs and to allow the drives to keep up with the competitors.

If they do, you should be able to upgrade the firmware on the HDD. I have done one firmware upgrade on my 7k60 about 2 months after I got it.

Well, thats good to know. Plus I think Hitachi was playing with these hard drives for awhile now simply waiting for seagate to release their 7200.1 series. They have probably done all the testing they are going to do.

Well, finally posted the bechmarks. Take a look for my other thread. I will leave this thread open for anyone else that want to share their opinions about their drives.
