True that technology keeps improving, but you'll notice certain times where it makes a huge leap. The dual core is one of those IMO, and now the X1K chips are starting a whole new linup for ATI. So once I can get my hands on a mainstream notebook with a dual core processor and an X1600, I'll be happy :P

After reading reviews and benchmarks on the desktop version of the X1600, I am less than impressed. Here is a typical comment from a review of the ATI X1000 series at HotHardware:

"The Radeon X1600 XT was much faster than the X1300, as expected, but its performance fell somewhere in between a GeForce 6600 GT and a GeForce 6800 GT. In a head-to-head comparison though, the GeForce 6800 GT would significantly outperform the X1600 XT in the vast majority of today's benchmarks."

The reasons for the lower performance of the X1600 can be seen in this table from the article. In particular, note the fillrates.

I would expect the relative performance differences to be similar when comparing the ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 to the NVidia GeForce Go 6800. If so, the Mobility Radeon X1600 introduction will be more of a yawn than a wow.

Well, The X1600 will running a lot cooler and with less power than the nVidia counterpart. To those of us that wants a nice balance between performance, size and batterylife. The X1600 will be a much better choice. You may not realise it but hardcore gamer makes up a very tiny faction of the total laptop user pool and FPS gamer a smaller percentage still.

Agreed, the 1600 wont be a power card. But a perfect balance. We wont need a million FPS overhead in games if we're purchacing a midrange card. We've probably got something else in mind

Fill rates my arse. Who cares, its gonna be about twice if not three times better in terms of performance than the x600. Thats amazing on a 14" with 1280 x 768 screen (as in the new asus w3v successor - out spring).

It will play any game at that resolution. Though i only play championship manager 01/02 it wont matter that much to me! But UT 2007 looks very nice!

It'll be about twice as powerful as the x700. Three to three and a half times as powerful as the x600. Judging by 3dmark scores.

1400x1050 and still wonder why your card doesn't keep up?

About the MR X1600, I am quite sure it will replace the 6800 on many machines. It's a newer (and simpler) design, built using a newer technology, all to reduce power. If it gives the 6800 power while improving battery life, the task is accomplished.

People should stop begging for laptops that match desktop PCs. Desktops have massive fans and power outlets ready, laptops do not.

Current laptops like the Dell M70 have more than enough power to play most games today and the ones in the foreseable future. If you want all the power money can buy, a desktop will always be the answer.

As a graphics artist and Linux user, I tend to favor what works for me, and thats Nvidia :P Many 3D apps have issues with ATI drivers (not saying they're bad cards, but the drivers suck :P) And yes this is based on recent fact, not some 3 year old one time driver. Everyone knows ATI's OpenGL drivers are not all that amazing. Though I hear they're working on it. Good for them I just hope it levels the playing field with Nvidia, so I get more options in notebooks...

I dont know about most people, but I sure as heck like to properly see my UI while working in my 3D app of choice :P And in linux, while ATI hardware will work, there are fewer problems with Nvidia's. For me I just run two commands and I'm set. For ATI there can be quite a few headaches getting drivers loaded.. It's possible, but annoying

yup, i agree. as long as nvidia is equal to ATI in the hardware deprtment, i will always pick nvidia over ati cause of their linux drivers.

atis drivers have improved though and now ATI is actually beeting nvidia in windows doom 3 benchmarks wit htheir new cards. hopefully these performance improvements go over to the linux side, and more importantly, the linux drivers will be easier to install and support suspend/resume better.

I know their openGL drivers arent the best, but they have been getting better. And heres to a good future! I'm always willing to see what ATi has to offer though. Hense my current laptop. My computers have had about equal numbers of ATI and Nvidia cards in them over the years though.

before the x1600 come out there will be a 7600go with better power consumption and availability

the best way do have power and battery ist crossfire for notebooks
