Will the 7700 run with the top closed?

If I'm using an external monitor, can I run a 7700 with the top closed?
Or will it cause overheating problems even if it is possible?

If you change the settings in the Control Panel not to Sleep when closed it should be possible. There shouldn't be overheating problems.

The only problem I've heard of is the possible damage to the screen because it sits right above the video card. I use an external monitor too, and I keep the lid slightly ajar for ventilation. It's also helpful for accessing the power button,

I have run my 7700 with the lid closed, playing music when I go to bed, for a couple of hours without any noticeable problems.

That is not recommended.

Hello im new here, I also have a 7700m

I ran mine with the lid shut on a external monitor a few weeks ago, it was ok for about an hour or 2 but then extreme artifacts came up on screen, I shut down and left it for about 30mins to cool down then it was ok, from now on I always leave the lid ajar when running on a external monitor.

There is a heatsink under the keyboard and it also exhausts heat from there. It will run with the lid closed but it is not recommended to do so for long periods of time.

If possible don“t ever do that.

But it sounds like I'm ok if I leave the lid propped up a bit so the air can flow?

(I haven't received my 7700 yet... Just trying to figure out desk space/monitor arrangement and such. My current laptop is an old Dell 8100 which docks under the monitor.)

Keep it open

Ya, I would suggest keeping a crack on it too . You will be praying to the if you ever end up with problems. I have posted somewere before, I ran the airconditioning vent directly to the lappy, not because I was having problems, because the keyboard was getting hot
