To get the builtin mic working fine and external mic you should do the following:-
Go to windows "Control Panel" Select the "Sounds and Audio Devices". Click on "Voice" tab. Click on the Volume under "Voice Recording" section. This launches a new window. In that window from the menu "Options" check the advanced controls. Now you should see an advanced button, click on this and select the microphone boost option
