Thread Starter
Sager Sent me unreleased bios for my 8890, since it is crashing cause of bad ram and they want to see if these new bios will fix the problem. i have no clue how to apply this update, it is not like the one released on 9/19 where is automatically formats the disk for u and writes the needed files. its just an exe. anyone have any clue ?? i'll attach it so you can see what i'm taking about. when u double click the exe, it opens command prompt quickly and then vanishes. lemme no if anyone has experiance installing bios like this..

link on the way... here ya go...the unreleased bios that i dunno how to use.

See if this example gives you enough info. "Most" BIOS flashes involve booting to DOS (thus the Startup-capable floppy disk) and then running the flash BAT or EXE file. Surf around the forums if you need more info. I got quite a few hits on BIOS and INSTALL, but look around last winter and early spring when many of us were doing it alot.

any clue what version of the bios it is? Is it the 1.00.3F version (or something like that) that fixes the correct graphics, or something later?

Here is the easiest set of steps to do this BIOS flash.

1. Get a blank floppy
2. Download this to your hard drive, somewhere you can remember, like C:\Temp
3. Double click pct8890bios.exe (link above) and follow the instructions. It will create a good boot disk for you
4. Put the 889BVR06.EXE file in your C:\Temp directory
5. Go to the start menu and select "Run..."
6. Type "cmd" (enter all commands without the quotes) and hit enter
7. A Dos window will appear. Type "cd C:\Temp" and hit enter.
8. Type "889BVR06.EXE -sager a:" and hit enter.
9. You will be asked if it is ok to replace about 4 or so files. Type "y" for each.
10. Now reboot. THe flash will happen automatically

You are done.

BTW, this installs BIOS 1.00.06-T1

I have no clue what it fixes, but I am running it now with no problems.

I have used that BIOS update

Hey

I got the same BIOS update from sager. Follow what I did and see if it works for you (it did for me):

1)Save file to a new floppy disk

2)Run Command prompt

3)Change to A:

4)Type the following at a: prompt "889bvr06 -sager A:" and hit return

5)Create a MS-DOS bootable disk

a) Go to bootbisk.info and go to download section
b) Under 'bootdisk standard' click on DOS
c) Downlaod Dos v6.22 to your hard drive
d) Run the program. It will ask for you to insert a new floppy disk.
e) Insert a empty floppy disk and follow on screen directions
f) Open files on floppy disk and delete HIMEM.sys file

6) Reboot computer with bootable disk in the a: drive! The computer will load up in MS-DOS

7) Replace the bootable disk for the disk with the extracted BIOS files

8) At the A: prompt type "autoexec"

9) The BIOS screen should appear and there should be an automatic BIOS flash

10) When finished it will ask you to press any key to re-boot

11) Remove the floppy disk and press any key to reboot

I hope this helps!! If you have any questions let me know!!

Cheers

Wireless off after bios update

Thanks guys for letting us know.

After flashing, my wireless did not come on. I got worried...

No big deal: just press FN-F7 to activate WiFi.

Anyone know what they changed in 1.00.06-T1 from 1.00.03-T7 (the one James was trying to refer to that fixed the graphics artifacts occassionally happening after a reboot)?

Thats exactly what I get!!!

Yesterday when I booted it in the morning I played FIFA 2004 and got major graphics glitches and blocks appearing on the screen.
I take it this BIOS fixes that?

Is it stable to use and does it need a re-install of windows?

EDIT: Just flashed it with that BIOS and it went fine.
Only time will tell now if it cures the graphics glitches I sometimes get at first boot.

Just to add to that you need to edit pctorque.bat to point to the new BIOS.
Just right click and select edit and change the name from the old bios to the new one then save it.
You can also delete the old bios rom as well now.

Mozey - if you had a version of the BIOS older than 1.00.03-T7 (most early 8890's shipped with 3-T2) then 3-T7 at least fixed the graphics glitches (and also seemed to fix the kb issue as well). If you are now running 1.00.06-T1 (the version that n666z posted) then I would stick to that (I am still on 3-T7 - if it ain't broken don't fix it ).

tezz - man are you having a bad day. Which BIOS version have you gone back to in order to become stable again? 3-T2, 3-T7 or 6-T1?

If you are stable screen wise with what ever version, stay with that until you check your memory is working. Get yourself a copy of memtest-86 (www.memtest86.com) load it onto a floppy as per instructions and make sure your memory is working first. You may also have just one dud stick. You can test this by removing either one testing it then swap sticks. The other issue that has come up is mis-matched memory. Because the 8890 runs dual channel it is best if the memory sticks are a matched pair (same batch numbers). You don't mention when you system was shipped because there were some early systems that had non-paired memory in them which caused problems.

If your memory test is fine I would start with BIOS 3-T7 and install that to see if you are stable. If that works then and only then would I go to 6-T1. If you need 3-T7 let me know via email.

Wow, I feel antiquated, I think I'm still on BIOS 1.00.02 or something like that! I can never see what the screen says, it goes by too fast... (I know about the pause thing, but there's never been a reason...)
Lucky I guess James .
I am surprised you don't get the graphics glitches. The worst offender for bringing on the fault was the Rendering with Natural Light ATI demo. I would get random black triangles across the surface of the marble column. But that is now fixed.

So if you don't get the glitches then don't fix it, 'cuz its not broken

Thanks for the help man.....

ok, my question is... Should I update the bios?
I have seen a flicker from time to time.. is that the only fix?
It depends upon the version of the BIOS you are running now DarphBobo.
If you are running 1.00.03-T2 then I would definitely upgrade.
If you are running 1.00.03-T7 (which fixed the graphics artifacts) then 1.00.06-T1 may help. We don't know what they changed between 3-T7 and 6-T1.

Or you could get the ultimate boot cd iso and burn it and have 1 cd for almost any diagnostic program you need to use.. memory testers harddrive diagnostics etc....
